Will Middlebrooks has a July 1 opt-out clause.

Middlebrooks accepted an assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier this week. The 27-year-old struggled in spring training and batted just .212 with a .602 OPS in 270 plate appearances last season for the Padres. He is not relevant to fantasy baseball pursuits.

Brewers re-assigned 3B Will Middlebrooks, INF Jake Elmore, OF Eric Young Jr. and C Josmil Pinto to minor league camp.

Middlebrooks looked to have a good shot at the Brewers' third base job when he signed over the winter, but the acquisition of Aaron Hill changed things. The 27-year-old batted just .195 this spring.
Mar 27 - 12:34 PM

Brewers signed 3B Will Middlebrooks to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Middlebrooks was non-tendered by the Padres earlier this month after batting just .212 with nine home runs and a .602 OPS over 270 plate appearances this past season. However, there's opportunity at third base with the Brewers, so he's in a good position to win a roster spot in the spring. Interestingly, he will be competing with former Red Sox prospect Garin Cecchini.

WEEI's Rob Bradford reports about 10 teams have shown interest in Will Middlebrooks.

The Padres non-tendered him earlier this week. Middlebrooks fared poorly in his only season in San Diego, hitting .212 with only nine homers and 29 RBI. The 27-year-old offers some appeal as a utility player. He started games at three different positions last year.

Padres non-tendered INF Will Middlebrooks.

Middlebrooks was the Padres' Opening Day third baseman in 2015, but he went on to hit .212/.241/.361 in 270 plate appearances. This after posting a .522 OPS in 2014. It will probably do him some good to get out of San Diego. The 27-year-old is now a free agent.

Padres optioned INF Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A El Paso.

The Padres had been shoehorning Middlebrooks in at shortstop some of late with Yangervis Solarte taking over as the regular third baseman. Ultimately, though, he just hasn't hit enough to justify a roster spot, batting only .212/.241/.361. Abraham Almonte has taken his spot on the roster.

Will Middlebrooks was removed from Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks with an apparent injury.

Middlebrooks appeared to roll his ankle on a bat in the Diamondbacks on-deck circle while chasing down a foul pop fly. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but will be evaluated by team trainers. The Padres should have an update on his status after the game.

Will Middlebrooks swatted his seventh home run of the season as the Padres cruised past the Pirates 7-1 on Sunday.

His towering two-run drive to left field came off Pirates starter Jeff Locke in the third inning, increasing the Padres lead to 5-0. He would later add a sacrifice fly, finishing the evening 1-for-4 with three RBI. While he isn't hitting for a strong average or getting on base much (.238/.271/.419), he has provided punch from the bottom of the lineup with seven homers and 21 RBI.

Will Middlebrooks went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 5-4 win against the Angels.

Middlebrooks' two-run round-tripper off Garrett Richards in the fourth inning gave the Padres a 3-2 lead in an eventual 5-4 triumph. He continues to be a frustrating asset in NL-only leagues, though the third baseman has performed better of late. Middlebrooks has exactly two hits in five of his last eight games. Of course, in the other three he had zero. He's slashing .226/.260/.397 with six homers.

Will Middlebrooks will make his first career start at shortstop Saturday against the Dodgers.

Middlebooks played one inning at shortstop against the Diamondbacks on May 10. With Middlebrooks occupying shortstop, Cory Spangenberg will draw the start at third base. Alexi Amarista, who has started at shortstop for 31 of San Diego's 44 games this season, will get the night off.

Will Middlebrooks went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win against the Mariners.

Middlebrooks is on a two-game hitting streak, which his owners know is relevant news, as he hadn't reached via hit since April 27 before that. The narrative hasn't changed from the past few years: Middlebrooks swings and missed a whole lot, but he'll run into a ball and tattoo it every now and again. He's not long for the big leagues if he can't make better contact (he's been worth a negative WAR in every campaign since his rookie showing in 2012), but there's enough promise here for the Padres to give him an extended audition. Middlebrooks is slashing .196/.245/.363 through 33 games.
