Red Sox placed 3B Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list with lower back spasms.
Middlebrooks suffered the injury Wednesday and aggravated it Thursday. The Red Sox initially said he was day-to-day, but evidently they've decided the best course of action was to sit him down for a couple weeks. Middlebrooks struck out the inning before, but it's not clear if he tweaked something during that at-bat or earlier. It's not clear at this point how serious the ailment is. The Red Sox should provide an update after the game.

Will Middlebrooks delivered a three-run double with two outs in the ninth to lead the Red Sox past the Rays 4-3 on Thursday.

Middlebrooks has been too often overmatched this year, but he is swinging better again of late. In his last seven games, he's 8-for-27, with all of those hits going for extra bases (seven doubles, one homer). He's also fanned a modest six times in that span after striking out 39 times in his first 32 games.

Will Middlebrooks hit his seventh home run as the Red Sox beat the Rays on Wednesday.

Middlebrooks also doubled on the night, raising his average to an underwhelming .208. Despite that low mark, he's been hitting for power as promised. More importantly, the 24-year-old has little competition for at-bats at third base. He should continue to supply home runs if nothing else.

WEEI.com's Alex Speier reports that Will Middlebrooks may been dealing with a separated rib.

Middlebrooks was able to return Thursday, but he still isn't 100 percent. "This one doesn't sound like much, but it really hurts," he said. "It really affects me -- when I swing, when I throw, it's on my right side. This is [one of the more painful injuries]." Middlebrooks will attempt to play through the rib issue, but it's clear this could be more serious than originally thought. Despite the Red Sox not placing him on the disabled list, his health status is a concern.

Will Middlebrooks went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in Friday's win over the Blue Jays.

It was Middlebrooks' first multi-hit game since May 1. Meanwhile, it was his first RBI since way back on April 26. His power should continue to make him relevant in mixed leagues, but with a 109/18 K/BB ratio through 109 games in the majors, we're not optimistic about him being much of an asset in the batting average department.

Middlebrooks called out for the trainer while in the field in the third and had a little talk with manager John Farrell at the time, but he stayed in and played the rest of the game. The double was his first extra-base hit in 10 games since April 27.

An MRI taken Wednesday morning on Will Middlebrooks' sore rib cage showed no structural damage.

X-rays were also negative. Middlebrooks is not in Boston's starting lineup on Wednesday but he could return Thursday. He bruised his ribs Tuesday night in an ugly collision with teammate David Ross.
