Michael Almanzar (knee) will begin light baseball activities on Monday.

A Rule 5 pick, Almanzar is dealing with patellar tendinitis in his left knee. The Orioles are content to stash him on the disabled list, so they'll bring the third baseman along slowly.
Apr 6 - 12:04 PM

Orioles placed 3B Michael Almanzar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 23, with left patellar tendinitis.

The Rule 5 pick will be stashed on the DL for a while to recover. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined.

Michael Almanzar (knee) will likely start the season on the disabled list.

Almanzar was diagnosed with left patellar tendinitis after injuring his knee playing first base Saturday. The Rule 5 pick gets returned to his original team if he doesn't make the 25-man roster, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the injury delays that decision. "We were prepared to make a decision on him, but that will wait now," Showalter said. "Shouldn't be too long."

Michael Almanzar was diagnosed with left patellar tendinitis following an MRI.

Almanzar, a Rule 5 pick, is expected to be shut down for at least a few days. It would be surprising if he didn't get stashed on the DL at this point.
Mar 25 - 2:37 PM

Michael Almanzar (knee) will be shut down for a couple of days.

Almanzar underwent an MRI on his left knee Monday and it apparently didn't show any major damage. The 23-year-old outfielder was selected from the Red Sox in December's Rule 5 Draft and could be stashed on the disabled list to begin the year.

Michael Almanzar is getting an MRI on his left knee.

Almanzar has been dealing with some swelling in the knee and the Orioles want to be sure it's nothing serious. The 23-year-old outfielder was a Rule 5 Draft Pick from the Red Sox and the O's will have to return him to Boston if they can't find a roster spot for him. Maybe they'll hide him on the disabled list.
Mar 24 - 12:59 PM

Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar went 2-for-3 and hit his first homer as the Orioles edged the Pirates 7-6 on Monday.

The 23-year-old Almanzar is 5-for-19 with five RBI in his long shot bid to make the Orioles. It's hard to imagine the team keeping him, even more so with the news today that Buck Showalter is considering carrying 13 pitchers initially. A more likely possibility is that the Orioles send the Red Sox a prospect in return for his rights.

Orioles selected 3B Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox in the 2013 Rule 5 draft.

Almanzar is a former $1.5 million bonus baby from the Dominican Republic who hasn't yet put together all of his tools on the field. He has high-voltage raw power and a cannon for an arm, but his long swing and middling athleticism has hindered his upward mobility. The son of former major league reliever Carlos slashed .268/.328/.432 at Double-A Portland this past season.

17-year-old Michael Almanzar had two hits in a fourth straight game Monday for the Rookie GCL Red Sox.

He's off to an 8-for-19 start in his pro debut. Almanzar, the son of former major league reliever Carlos, was given a $1.5 million bonus to sign out of the Dominican Republic last summer.
