Reds optioned 1B Neftali Soto to Triple-A Louisville.

Soto managed just three hits in 28 at-bats with the Reds and is getting sent down even after Joey Votto (quad) landed on the DL. The 25-year-old figures to return later this season.

Neftali Soto will be used as a catcher in spring training with the Reds.

Soto caught 10 games in A-ball back in 2010, but that's the extent of his pro catching experience. He's since bounced around between third and first base but has never really found a home defensively. It might be a long shot that the soon-to-be 25-year-old will work out behind the plate, but his bat would be intriguing if the conversion is successful. Soto hit .271/.313/.414 with 15 homers last season and slugged 31 bombs back in 2011.

Reds recalled 1B Neftali Soto from Triple-A Louisville.

Reds optioned 1B Neftali Soto, RHP Curtis Partch, IF Henry Rodriguez, and RHP Pedro Villarreal to Triple-A Louisville.

No surprises here. With Joey Votto's injury history, it's possible that we'll see Soto in Cincinnati at some point in 2013. The Reds have also optioned 1B/OF Donald Lutz to Double-A Pensacola.

The Reds are considering moving Neftali Soto back to third base.

Soto began his professional career as a third baseman and shortstop but was eventually moved to first base when it looked like he couldn't hack it defensively. However, with Joey Votto entrenched at first, the Reds might give Soto another look at the hot corner. "They're talking about it, because he came up a third baseman, then really improved as a first baseman," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Those two positions are mirror images, plus he has a good throwing arm. So, he could play third base."

Neftali Soto went 4-for-4 in the Reds Cactus League opener, a loss to the Indians.

Soto also drove in two runs for the losing squad. The 23-year-old has played primarily at first base for the Reds' minor league affiliates since being selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft. With Todd Frazier taking over full-time duties at third base and Joey Votto's injury history, it's not impossible that we'll see Soto in Cincinnati at some point in 2013. It just won't likely be in April.
