Jhoulys Chacin will pitch for Venezuela in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
The expectation is that he'll pitch as a starter during the tournament. Chacin recently signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Padres and should have a rotation spot to begin the year. The 29-year-old had a 4.81 ERA and 119/55 K/BB ratio in 144 innings over 22 starts and 12 relief appearances last season between the Braves and Angels. Jan 19 - 5:39 PM

Padres signed RHP Jhoulys Chacin to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.

The deal was agreed to on Saturday and then finalized Tuesday after Chacin passed his pre-signing physical. Chacin posted a rough 4.81 ERA in 144 innings (22 starts, 12 relief appearances) last season between the Braves and Angels, but the 28-year-old right-hander will be a candidate to serve as the Padres' Opening Day starter in 2017. That's how bad the rotation options are in San Diego. Chacin turns 29 years old in January.

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres have signed free-agent right-hander Jhoulys Chacin to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.

The deal is pending a physical. Chacin had an up-and-down season in 2016, going 6-8 with a 4.81 ERA over 34 appearances for the Angels and Braves. He's a decent flyer for a team in rebuilding mode. After some significant roster turnover, Chacin might end up being the Padres' Opening Day starter.

Jhoulys Chacin dominated the Astros on Sunday, firing seven shutout frames in the Angels 8-1 win.

He struck out seven batters against one walk and four base hits -- all of which were singles. The Astros were powerless against him today. He finishes with a 6-8 record and a 4.81 ERA. It was a rollercoaster season for Chacin but there were more lows than highs. He split time between the Braves and Angels and between the bullpen and starting rotation. He struck out 119 batters and walked 55 in 144 innings.

Jhoulys Chacin gave up two runs -- both unearned -- in six innings and did not factor into the decision in the Angels 10-4 victory over the Astros on Saturday.

He allowed four base hits, issued three free passes and punched out five in the game. Both runs the Astros scored against him came in the third inning without benefit of a hit. A George Springer line out was followed by a throwing error, two walks, a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring wild pitch by Chacin. His record holds at 5-8 but his ERA improves to 5.06 in 137 innings.

Jhoulys Chacin held the Rangers to one run over five innings but took a no-decision on Monday.

He was inefficient, needing 91 pitches to get through his five frames, but Chacin was able to keep the Rangers mostly at bay. He gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three. Chacin has allowed one run in each of his starts since re-joining the Angels' rotation. He'll face the Astros next.

Jhoulys Chacin pitched six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision Wednesday against the Mariners.

Chacin, who had worked in relief his previous four outings, struck out five and walked none in lowering his ERA to 5.43. Because of the Angels' injuries, he'll likely finish out the season in the rotation.

Jhoulys Chacin hurled 5 2/3 shutout innings Sunday in the Angels' 2-0 win over the Yankees.

Chacin entered the game with a brutal 6.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP, but the Yankees couldn't get anything going against him. He struck out four and scattered a walk and six hits over his 5 2/3 frames. Chacin's season ERA is now down to 5.61. How exciting.

Jhoulys Chacin failed to impress in Tuesday's no-decision against the Mariners, surrendering four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Chacin managed just two strikeouts on the evening. The M's burned him in dribs and drabs, with an infield RBI single by Ketel Marte and a two-run single by Seth Smith in the second inning (plus an RBI single by Kyle Seager in the fifth) spelling the damage. In 76 2/3 innings since coming over from the Braves via trade, Chacin has pitched to a tough 6.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. A home start against the Yankees shows next on his schedule, assuming he remains in the rotation.

Jhoulys Chacin was pounded by the Indians on Thursday, allowing six hits and seven runs over 1 1/3 innings before being removed.

Chacin, ironically enough, was inserted back into the rotation after Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment due to poor performance. Chacin didn't offer much hope for better days, yielding five runs in the first inning and two more before exiting in the second. He had been pitching fairly well in long relief prior to Thursday's disaster, and with few better options the Angels will likely stick with the 28-year-old in hopes he can right the ship. Chacin will carry a 5.84 ERA and 1.53 WHIP into Tuesday's start against the Mariners.

Jhoulys Chacin will start for the Angels on Thursday in Cleveland.

He'll take over for Tim Lincecum, who has been sent to Triple-A Salt Lake. Chacin holds a 5.27 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 15 starts and eight relief appearances this season with the Angels. Do not play him versus Cleveland.

Jhoulys Chacin was tagged for five runs on 12 hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings in Friday’s loss to the Red Sox.

Chacin now owns a 9.55 ERA over his last five starts. With Nick Tropeano stashed away in Triple-A, he might not be long for a rotation spot at this point. Assuming he gets another start, he’ll face the Rays next week.

Jhoulys Chacin failed to strike out a batter while walking four, leading to four runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss on Saturday.

His record fell to 3-6. Chacin's 5.64 ERA this year is worse than it ever was when he was pitching for the Rockies in Coors Field. Given that his velocity is up this year and his rate stats are close to his career averages, it is probable that Chacin will manifest some improvement as the season progresses. But even then he will remain on the fringe of being rosterable in mixed leagues.

Jhoulys Chacin was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- in two-plus innings by the Astros on Monday.

Chacin walked five and hit a batter, which simply isn't going to fly for him with the stuff he brings to the mound these days. He can hold his own when he's on, but there's no fantasy value to be had here.

Jhoulys Chacin recorded an uneventful outing in Tuesday's win over the Twins, yielding three runs on seven hits over five-plus innings.

Chacin struck out two and walked one on the evening. He surrendered solitary runs in the second, third and fifth innings -- with Joe Mauer picking up an RBI triple to score that fifth-inning run. The 28-year-old right-hander isn't horrendous by any stretch of the imagination, but offers little in the way of fantasy upside. Since joining the Angels in a trade, he holds a 4.54 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 26/14 K/BB ratio over seven starts (41 2/3 innings). A road date with the Astros shows next on his schedule.
