Orioles recalled RHP Alex Burnett from Triple-A Norfolk.

Burnett was just optioned to the minors over the weekend, but he's eligible to return following Wei-Yin Chen's oblique injury. The 25-year-old had a 3.52 ERA in relief 67 appearances with the Twins last season and will pitch in middle relief.

Alex Burnett took the loss in Wednesday's exhibition against Puerto Rico after giving up three runs in 1 1/3 innings.

The Twins fell 7-6. While today's outing won't count in his spring stats, he's now given up five runs and 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings. That's a tough start for a guy the Twins are counting on as a sixth- and seventh-inning guy.

Alex Burnett returned to action on Monday, earning the win with one scoreless inning of relief against the Athletics.

Burnett experienced elbow discomfort last week and was a candidate for the disabled list. But he responded well to anti-inflammatories and earned his second win of the season -- despite giving up the go-ahead run on an eighth inning base hit. Burnett's ERA (2.84) is surprisingly good given his 7/11 BB/K ratio and the fact that opponents are batting .268 against him.

Burnett (elbow) threw his first bullpen session Saturday. He has responded well to anti-inflammatories and could be available going into next week. Burnett has compiled a 2.92 ERA this season over 24 2/3 innings.

Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com reports that Alex Burnett could be headed to the disabled list due to right elbow discomfort.

Burnett's elbow started bothering him following his appearance Wednesday in Chicago. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Deolis Guerra and Lester Oliveros are the candidates to be recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Burnett didn't really get a fair shot at the beginning of this season, spending only eight total days in the majors. He'll pitch in middle relief this time around.
