Esmil Rogers allowed one run over five innings in a win over the Indians on Friday.
Rogers, who was claimed off waivers this week and took David Phelps' place in the rotation, held his former team to just four hits and one walk while fanning three batters. The only run scored on an RBI single in the first inning. Michael Pineda (shoulder) figures to join the rotation next week, but the Yankees have to be thrilled with what they got from Rogers here. Esmil Rogers will start Friday against the Indians.

Rogers was just claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays last week and ultimately got the call over Chase Whitley to start in place of David Phelps. Of course, it's possible that Whitley will just follow Rogers in relief. Either way, Rogers isn't a fantasy option.

Esmil Rogers and Chase Whitley appear to be the leading candidate to start on Friday against the Indians.

Both are in the bullpen now, but Rogers has made seven starts in the minors this season and Whitley has made 12 starts for the Yankees. It might only be a spot start, as Michael Pineda (back) could be ready to rejoin the rotation next week.

Yankees claimed RHP Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Rogers was designated for assignment by Toronto on July 27. The 28-year-old right-hander owns an ugly 5.59 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 396 career major league innings.
Jul 31 - 2:06 PM

Blue Jays designated RHP Esmil Rogers for assignment.

Rogers was only up with the big club for a few days and didn't appear in a game. He cleared waivers the last time he was designated for assignment and should do so again, though he'll have the option of declaring free agency.
Jul 27 - 11:08 AM

Blue Jays purchased the contract of RHP Esmil Rogers from Triple-A Buffalo.

Rogers posted a 6.97 ERA over 16 appearances at the major league level earlier this season, but he's back because the Blue Jays need a fresh arm for their bullpen. Look for him to pitch in long relief.
Jul 22 - 3:23 PM

Esmil Rogers is expected to be called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

Rogers was outrighted off the 40-man roster back in May, but the Blue Jays need a fresh arm in their bullpen. The 28-year-old owns a 6.97 ERA over 16 appearances at the major league level this season and figures to pitch in long relief.

Blue Jays sent Esmil Rogers outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

The veteran right-hander passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as organizational depth both in the rotation and the bullpen for the Blue Jays.
May 24 - 1:50 PM

Blue Jays designated RHP Esmil Rogers for assignment.

The move clears room on the roster for Liam Hendriks, who will start Friday. Rogers struck out a batter per inning but posted a 6.97 ERA over 16 appearances for the Jays this season. The 28-year-old still throws in the mid-90s, so he'll land on his feet somewhere.
May 23 - 12:07 PM

Esmil Rogers was pounded for 10 runs -- nine earned -- in 2 2/3 innings by the Pirates on Tuesday.

Ouch. The wind was a huge problem for Jays pitchers today, but this was a bad showing regardless. Rogers' spring ERA jumped all of the way up to 9.37, though he does have 22 strikeouts to go along with his five homers and 25 hits allowed in 16 1/3 innings this spring. With his roster spot in doubt, the Jays could consider releasing Rogers to save three-quarters or his $1.85 million salary or waiving him in order to attempt to send him to the minors.
Mar 25 - 5:46 PM

Esmil Rogers yielded one run in 4 2/3 innings and fanned six Phillies in his start Thursday.

It's not official, but it sure looks like the Jays rotation is set, assuming Brandon Morrow and J.A. Happ finish the spring healthy (Drew Hutchinson figures to get the other spot). Rogers will probably stick around as a middle reliever, though the Jays could also flip him of someone wants to offer up a prospect.
Mar 20 - 4:36 PM

Esmil Rogers gave up four runs and five hits in three innings against the Astros on Thursday.

Carlos Correa and Jonathan Singleton hit back-to-back homers off him in the third. Rogers has a $1.85 million deal and is out of options, so he was certainly being penciled onto the Toronto staff at the beginning of the spring. Since he is struggling so far -- he's allowed seven runs and three homers in nine innings -- he seems more likely to pitch in middle relief than make the rotation.
Mar 13 - 5:09 PM

Blue Jays avoided arbitration with RHP Esmil Rogers by agreeing to a one-year, $1.85 million contract.

Rogers was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason. The right-hander shuffled back-and-forth between the rotation and bullpen for the Jays last year, putting up a 4.77 ERA over 137 2/3 innings.
Jan 17 - 11:28 AM

Esmil Rogers allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss against the Orioles on Wednesday.

Rogers had some good moments among his 20 starts for the Blue Jays this season, but he ended on a down note on Wednesday. He allowed eight hits, including two home runs, while walking just two. The loss dropped him to 5-9 for the year, and he finishes the season with a 4.77 ERA.

Esmil Rogers was yanked after just 2 1/3 innings in Friday’s loss to the Red Sox after allowing a pair of runs on three hits and five walks.

Rogers fanned two on the evening, and needed 60 pitches just to record seven outs. All of the damage against him was directly related to his erratic nature, as Dustin Pedroia scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, and Mike Carp drew a bases loaded walk in the third. It’s been an up-and-down season for the 28-year-old righty, who will carry a 4.39 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into his final start against the Orioles in Baltimore on Wednesday.
