Royals and C Brett Hayes avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $600,000 contract.

With Brayan Pena out of the picture, Hayes looks likely to open the 2013 season as the primary backup to starting catcher Salvador Perez. Hayes, 28, batted .202/.229/.254 in 39 games this past season for the Marlins.

Royals claimed C Brett Hayes off waivers from the Marlins.

Hayes has put up a .217/.266/.361 batting line over parts of four big league seasons, but he's pretty good defensively. The Royals have some catching depth, though, so he could wind up at Triple-A.

Marlins recalled C Brett Hayes from Triple-A New Orleans.

Hayes hit just .202/.229/.254 over 39 contests in his time with the Fish this year. With John Buck and Rob Brantly likely to handle the catching duties next year, he'll probably return to New Orleans to start 2013.

Marlins optioned catcher Brett Hayes to Triple-A New Orleans.

Hayes has posted a .633 OPS in parts of the last four seasons as a backup catcher for the Marlins. This season, his slash line plummeted to .207/.235/.261 to go with an anemic 47/4 K/BB ratio. He could be back in September when rosters expand.

Brett Hayes launched a two-run homer in Sunday's loss to the Nationals.

The blast in the seventh inning KO'd Nats starter Chien-Ming Wang. It's the fourth longball in 122 at-bats on the year for the backup catcher. Needless to say, he doesn't belong on your fantasy roster.

Brett Hayes hit a grand slam in the Marlins' 6-5, 11-inning loss to the Brewers on Sunday.

Hayes' blast came with the Marlins trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning, but would be the last big hit they could muster after rallying from a 5-0 deficit. The home run was Hayes' second of the season, while he now has 10 RBI through just 34 at-bats.

Brett Hayes arrived this week at the Marlins' spring training complex.

With John Baker still in recovery mode from Tommy John surgery, Hayes is expected to open the season as the understudy to starting catcher John Buck. So the 26-year-old got down to spring training early and will look to familiarize himself with all of the Marlins' pitchers once they arrive.

Brett Hayes expects to miss 2-4 weeks of action due to a Grade 1 separated shoulder.

Evidently he and manager Edwin Rodriguez aren't on the same page, as Rodriguez said he thought Hayes would be out 7-10 days. Either way, it seems this could put Hayes' season in jeopardy. Brad Davis and the recently-recalled Chris Hatcher will handle catching duties while Hayes is sidelined.

Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said he expects Brett Hayes (shoulder) to miss 7-10 days of action.

Hayes was injured in Tuesday's game in a home plate collision with the Nationals' Nyjer Morgan. He had been getting lots of playing time with John Baker still on the shelf and Ronny Paulino getting suspended. Brad Davis figures to see the bulk of the action with Hayes out.

Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said Thursday that he plans to give Brett Hayes a good amount of playing time moving forward.

Hayes played very sparingly behind the plate before landing on the disabled list in late July, but the Marlins want Ronny Paulino to get some much-needed rest. "Hayes is going to start some games," Rodriguez said. "I think I'm going to use him more than I used him before." The 26-year-old Hayes is batting .219/.306/.344 with a homer and two RBI in 32 at-bats this season.

Marlins activated C Brett Hayes from the 15-day disabled list.

Hayes will resume his role as emergency catcher for the Marlins. He was 7-for-32 with a homer and two RBI before suffering a left wrist contusion.

Marins placed C-1B Brett Hayes on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist contusion.

He has essentially been the last man on the Marlins' bench anyways, so this won't be much of a loss. Hayes is 7-for-32 (.219) with one home run and two RBI this season.

Marlins recalled C-1B Brett Hayes from Triple-A New Orleans.

Hayes, 26, was batting .220/.254/.322 with one home run and five RBI over 59 at-bats with the Zephyrs. He was 3-for-11 as a September call-up last season and provides the ability to play catcher and first base in a pinch.

Marlins recalled catcher Brett Hayes from Triple-A New Orleans.

Hayes went 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts during a short stay with the Fish back in May. He'll sever as the Marlins' emergency third catcher for the final few weeks of the season.
