Kieschnick had been designated for assignment last weekend but will get to remain in the NL West. He hit .202/.295/.226 in 95 plate appearances last year for the Giants.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean indicated Saturday that the team will keep five outfielders on their 2014 Opening Day roster, with Roger Kieschnick a possibility to earn that final spot.

Juan Perez is probably the favorite to earn that final spot, but Sabean is intrigued by Kieschnick, who spent his offseason working out with Orioles slugger Chris Davis. The 27-year-old hit .273/.339/.497 with 13 homers and 56 RBI in 101 games at Triple-A Fresno in 2013.

Kieschnick had two singles in just eight at-bats this spring. He batted .255/.307/.429 with 16 homers, 65 RBI, 13 stolen bases and a .737 OPS over 501 plate appearances last season at the Double-A level and will likely need a full year at Triple-A.

Giants purchased the contract of OF Roger Kieschnick from Double-A Richmond.

He is now protected from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. Kieschnick, who turns 25 in January, batted .255/.307/.429 with 16 homers, 65 RBI, 13 stolen bases and a .737 OPS over 501 plate appearances this season at the Double-A level. The 2008 third-round pick has good pop from the left side, but his plate discipline continues to be an issue.

Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-5 and hit his fourth homer in the HWL on Tuesday.

Kieschnick, a 2008 third-round pick, is making his pro debut in Hawaii and hitting .274/.382/.524 through 25 games. He has struck out 35 times to go along with his 15 walks in 84 at-bats. The Texas Tech product generates nice power with his left-handed swing. It remains to be seen whether he'll make enough contact to someday contribute in the majors.
