Alex White (elbow) showed improved fastball velocity in a simulated game on Tuesday afternoon.

White underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last April. The right-hander could become an option for the Astros at some point in mid-to-late May.

Astros placed RHP Alex White on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with a right elbow injury.

White needs more time as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. He's not a given to be added to the big league roster once he's ready physically.

Alex White (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday.

It's a big step in the right direction for White, who is making his way back from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The young right-hander probably won't be available to the Astros until late April or early May. He has a 6.03 ERA in 149 1/3 career major league innings.

While being ready for Opening Day hasn't been ruled out, Alex White (elbow) is just shooting to be ready sometime in April.

Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, White threw to live hitters Monday and will do the same thing again on Friday. He's only thrown fastballs and changeups thus far but he plans to progress to breaking balls next week. "I’m waiting on the velocity, to be honest," White said. "They basically assured me it just kind of comes. We’re still at 10 months, and we’re looking at April." The Astros could use White some as a reliever in order to limit his workload, but the plan for now is him returning as a starter.

Alex White (elbow) is on track to be healthy at the start of spring training in February.

White missed the entire 2013 season while recovering from Tommy John reconstructive surgery. He is already throwing at the Astros' spring training complex in Florida.

Astros activated RHP Alex White from the 60-day disabled list.

The young right-hander missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. White's availability for the start of 2014 will be determined by his progress this winter. White is a lauded talent and former top prospect, but he owns a career 7.35 ERA and is coming off a career-threatening injury.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.

White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.

Alex White said Tuesday night that the Astros are waiting for an MRI of his right elbow to be examined by Dr. James Andrews.

White was placed on the 60-day disabled list with what was termed as a right elbow strain, but the Astros are preparing themselves for the possibility of Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old could pay a visit to Dr. Andrews later this week.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow indicated that Alex White (elbow) could require Tommy John surgery.

White showed diminished velocity this spring and has already been placed on the 60-day disabled list. The Astros are still waiting on a second opinion, but it's now looking like White could miss the entire 2013 season. "We’ll have a long discussion about the course of action," said Luhnow. "It’s a possibility."

Astros placed RHP Alex White on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

White posted a 6.86 ERA and 2.03 WHIP in 19 2/3 innings this spring while displaying diminished velocity. He had been in the running for the final spot in Houston's rotation, but the right-hander is now out indefinitely.

Alex White underwent an MRI on his right elbow Saturday.

White exited Friday's game with elbow discomfort and is dealing with a velocity drop that's "not normal." He was recently told that his fastball was only hitting 86 mph. It at least partly explains his 6.86 ERA this spring. When healthy, White should return in a bullpen role for the Astros.

Alex White wasn't too sharp Monday against the Nationals, yielding four runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings.

He struck out a pair and allowed a homer to Adam LaRoche. White didn't help his chances of beating Brad Peacock out for the fifth spot in the rotation with this effort, and he now holds a 6.86 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 19 2/3 Cactus League innings. Peacock has been much better, putting up a 3.68 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while striking out a batter per inning. The winner of the spot will be announced soon.
Mon, Mar 25, 2013 08:56:00 PM

Alex White and Brad Peacock will both have spots on the Astros' Opening Day roster.

One will start and one will serve as a long reliever in the bullpen. A decision on that front should be coming soon.

Alex White yielded two runs and seven hits over four innings Thursday in his start against the Nationals.

White got seven groundouts, which is pretty good, and he didn't walk anyone. He's probably ahead of John Ely on the rotation depth chart now, though he still needs a Jordan Lyles demotion or an Erik Bedard setback to open up a spot.
