Tanner Scheppers got the call and pitched a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to preserve the Rangers' 3-2 win over the Astros.
Scheppers retired the Astros in order, striking out one in the process. It's hard to know what to make of the Rangers' bullpen situation right now, but it's worth noting that Scheppers got a save chance a day after Sam Dyson blew his fifth save of the year. Perhaps Dyson wasn't available or Rangers manager Jeff Banister will employ a dreaded closer-by-committee down the stretch, but Scheppers, who has yet to allow a run in 3 1/3 innings since coming off the disabled list, is worth a speculative add for save-needy teams. Scheppers cleared the last hurdle before game action by getting through a 30-pitch live batting practice session Saturday. "In my mind, I feel like I’m ready," Scheppers said. "I think it’s about getting game experience and getting that blood flow again." Out all season following surgery to repair torn articular cartilage in his left knee, Scheppers will throw every third day through the end of August before eventually appearing back-to-back days. Obviously it will still be a while before he can rejoin the Rangers' bullpen.
