Rangers manager Ron Washington said Saturday that Tanner Scheppers is his top setup man.

Scheppers has unofficially held the title for a while. The hard-thrower has yet to allow a run this season and holds a 1.11 WHIP and 7/4 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings. With Joakim Soria recently suffering a setback, Scheppers should handle the eighth inning for a while. "We’ve certainly been hoping that one day he steps up and takes charge, and he’s stepping up," Washington said. "He’s got a good arm and the key is he’s throwing strikes." Apr 28 - 12:45 PM

Tanner Scheppers - R - Rangers

Tanner Scheppers has won a spot in the Rangers' bullpen.

Scheppers shook off some early hamstring tightness to post a 4.00 ERA and 6/1 K/BB ratio over nine innings of work this spring. The 26-year-old will operate in middle relief, but could earn his way into the late innings before long.

Tanner Scheppers - R - Rangers

Tanner Scheppers had surgery in October to address turf toe on his right foot.

It was a minor procedure and he shouldn't have any restrictions this spring. Scheppers posted a 4.45 ERA and 30/9 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings with the Rangers last season and should compete for a spot in the bullpen this spring.

Tanner Scheppers (knee) hopes to be available out of the Rangers' bullpen this weekend.

Scheppers was able to put more pressure on his right knee Thursday and was scheduled to play catch. He suffered a bruised knee during an appearance Tuesday. The hard-throwing right-hander holds a 4.50 ERA with 29 strikeouts over 30 relief innings this season.

An X-ray came back clean, as well. Scheppers has been diagnosed with a contusion on the knee and should be ready to pitch again soon.

The Rangers are still awaiting the results of an MRI, but it sounds like he's just day-to-day. We feel we dodged a bullet," general manager Jon Daniels said. "It feels like we may have avoided the worst."

Scheppers will be reevaluated on Wednesday, but it doesn't sound like anything serious. The right-hander has a 4.50 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 30 inning of relief this season.

Scheppers is the corresponding move for Robbie Ross (forearm strain), who was placed on the disabled Friday. It's possible he could be an option for the postseason roster if Ross requires an extended absence.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said they are in the process of reviewing the safety situation in Venezuela following the kidnapping of Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos and will coordinate with MLB before taking any action.

The Rangers have six players participating in the Venezuelan Winter League, including top pitching prospect Tanner Scheppers. The kidnapping of Ramos took place in Valencia, the same town where Scheppers' team is based. The Rangers also have multiple players who call Venezuela home, including shortstop Elvis Andrus.

Rangers prospect Tanner Scheppers has been promoted from Double-A Frisco to Triple-A Round Rock.

Scheppers actually spent most of the 2010 season at the Triple-A level, but he was forced to open at Double-A this year due to a back injury. The 24-year-old right-hander is hoping to climb his way to the major league bullpen in early September.

Harrison underwent an operation on April 23 to repair a herniated disk in his lower back but began feeling additional discomfort this week, necessitating another procedure. According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "operating under the assumption that Harrison will pitch again this season, but he will be out for at least three months." The hope had been that he would be ready to rock during the first week of June, but a more realistic timetable calls for him to be activated near the middle of the month.
