Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will be used as a reliever next season.
Scheppers was actually the Rangers' Opening Day starter, but he wound up posting a 9.82 ERA over four starts while being limited to 23 innings this season due to injury. He's out for the year with right elbow inflammation. "I still want to be a starter, but right now I'm a reliever," Scheppers said. "Everybody agrees that's best for the organization. At this point I just want to play again." Aug 12 - 8:31 PM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) said Thursday that the likelihood of him returning this season is "very slim."

Scheppers is two weeks into a six-week shutdown period for right elbow inflammation. "You kind of feel a little bit worthless just sitting on the DL, just watching on the sidelines," Scheppers said. "The likelihood of me coming back this year is very slim. It's not looking all that great, which is frustrating, but I have to look at the big picture things sometimes and get healthy."
Jun 26 - 9:51 PM

Rangers placed RHP Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

Yet another disabled list stint for a Rangers player. Scheppers has been battling elbow issues for the large majority of the 2014 season and is now out indefinitely.
Jun 11 - 4:34 PM

Rangers activated RHP Tanner Scheppers from the 15-day disabled list.

Scheppers allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings during his minor league rehab assignment, but the important part is that his elbow issue is behind him. While the Rangers had him in the rotation to begin the season, he'll return as a reliever.
Jun 5 - 4:14 PM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will pitch on Tuesday for Double-A Frisco.

After making three relief appearances at Triple-A, Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will continue to rehab a level lower. His last two Triple-A appearances have been rocky, as the righty allowed six hits (three of them homers) and five runs in just 2 2/3 innings. The Rangers likely want to see better results before bringing him back.
Jun 3 - 1:31 PM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will make three more rehab appearances before returning to the Rangers.

Scheppers threw his first rehab inning on Saturday at Double-A Frisco, allowing one (unearned) run. The current track he's on is leading to a June 3 activation date. Scheppers has been out since April 18 with elbow inflammation and will return in a bullpen role.
May 26 - 11:28 AM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will return as a reliever.

The Rangers are worried about putting too much stress on the right-hander's elbow, so they'll move him back to a mid-relief role. Scheppers has been on the disabled list since April 18 with elbow inflammation. He is currently throwing bullpen sessions and should be ready for activation near the end of this month.

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Tuesday that the club hasn't determined whether Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will be used as a starter or reliever when he returns.

"We haven't discussed that yet," Washington said. "It's premature. The main thing is to get him healthy. We've got to get him healthy and ready to compete again. When we get closer to that, before we start ramping him up we'll make a decision because we have to set up his program. We haven't set the program yet." Scheppers threw a 25-30 pitch bullpen session Monday with no issues. The righty prefers to remain a starter but is "willing to accept anything."
May 13 - 7:43 PM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session on Monday.

Scheppers began a flat-ground throwing program at the end of April and is now ready for mound work. He has been out for three weeks with muscle inflammation near his right elbow and probably won't be ready to rejoin the Rangers until late May or early June.
May 10 - 8:34 PM

Tanner Scheppers (elbow) will begin a throwing program Wednesday.

Scheppers has been shut down for nearly two weeks with muscle inflammation in his right elbow. It's not clear at this point how long it will be until he's ready to throw off a mound and then get into a game, but he might not have a rotation spot waiting for him once he's healthy.
Apr 29 - 7:54 PM

Rangers placed RHP Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list with muscle inflammation in his right elbow.

The club is saying Scheppers' ligament is fine, as it's a muscular injury. That's obviously preferred, but it's not clear how long he might be sidelined. Nick Martinez is expected to be recalled to start on Tuesday in Scheppers' place.
Apr 18 - 4:15 PM

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Thursday that removing Tanner Scheppers from the rotation is "nothing that's crossed my mind."

"We know it's a work in progress," Washington added. Scheppers was battered for six runs over just 2 1/3 frames Thursday against the Mariners and now has a 9.82 ERA over his first four starts. He's pitched beyond the fifth inning on just one occasion. Still, the Rangers don't really have any great alternatives with Matt Harrison (back) not quite ready. Scheppers will be on the chopping block in a couple weeks when Harrison returns.
Apr 17 - 8:34 PM

Tanner Scheppers was awful again but escaped with a no-decision Thursday, allowing six runs over just 2 1/3 frames in an 8-6 win over the Mariners.

The Rangers handed Scheppers a 4-0 lead, but the M's got to him in a big way in a six-run third inning. The righty allowed six hits and walked three on the day. He's issued eight free passes over his 18 1/3 innings this season and holds a 9.82 ERA. The Rangers probably would have booted him from the rotation already if they had more options. With Matt Harrison (back) due back soon, Scheppers better shape up in a hurry. He gets the A's next.
Apr 17 - 7:22 PM

Tanner Scheppers was shelled for five earned runs over seven innings Saturday in the Rangers' loss to Houston.

Scheppers now has two ugly outings and one decent one, and he'll carry a 7.88 ERA into his next start against the Mariners. The Rangers badly need Matt Harrison back.
Apr 12 - 11:35 PM

Tanner Scheppers pitched five innings and allowed two runs Monday in a loss to the Red Sox.

Scheppers was far more successful tonight that when he was slammed for seven runs on Opening Day, but unlike last time, the run support wasn't there. He ended up allowing nine hits, walking one and striking out three. He'll need to be better over his next couple of starts or risk being sent to the pen when Matt Harrison comes off the DL.
