MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports that Jesus Guzman has signed with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Japan's Central League.
Guzman elected free agency earlier this month after being removed from the Astros' 40-man roster. It's not clear how much the 30-year-old will be paid by Hiroshima, but he'll get the opportunity to play regularly in Japan, something he wasn't given in the states. Oct 26 - 1:05 PM

Jesus Guzman has elected free agency.

Guzman refuses his outright assignment to Triple-A Fresno. His lone season in Houston wound up being an unmitigated disaster, slashing a putrid .182/.272/.248 with two homers, nine RBI and a 52/19 K/BB ratio in 165 at-bats. He has shown the ability in the past to mash left-handed pitching, but will likely have to settle for a minor league deal with a spring training invitation.
Oct 11 - 9:00 AM

Astros sent 1B Jesus Guzman outright to Triple-A Fresno.

Guzman is now off Houston's 40-man roster. He batted just .182/.272/.248 in 69 games this season.
Oct 9 - 3:52 PM

Astros activated 1B Jesus Guzman from the 15-day disabled list.

Guzman, out since earlier this month with back spasms, hit .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles, five RBI and a 2/3 K/BB ratio over four rehab games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 30-year-old is batting just .200/.275/.269 over 60 games with the Astros this season and figures to serve in a bench role in his return.
Aug 19 - 2:49 PM

Jesus Guzman (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.

He shouldn't need more than a few games, putting him on track for activation next week. Guzman has batted just .200/.275/.269 for the Astros this season.
Aug 13 - 11:25 AM

Astros placed 1B Jesus Guzman on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 2, with back spasms.

Guzman had to be removed from Friday's game with the ailment and hasn't made enough progress since then in order to avoid a DL stint. Domingo Santana has replaced him on the roster.
Aug 3 - 10:24 AM

Jesus Guzman was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays due to back spasms.

Guzman had been 1-for-2 with an RBI single before departing. He has been abysmal at the plate this season, slashing a meager .200/.275/.269 with just eight RBI.
Aug 1 - 10:39 PM

Jesus Guzman's nightmarish 2014 season continued in Friday's loss to the Marlins, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

The main reason that Guzman has a job on the Astros bench is his ability to mash left-handed pitching, so when he fails to do that it gives cause for concern. He's hitting a mere .197/.274/.268 with two homers and seven RBI in 142 at-bats on the year.
Jul 25 - 11:22 PM

Jesus Guzman was back in the Astros' lineup on Tuesday.

Guzman had to be scratched from Sunday's contest with back discomfort. "My back is much better today, and from yesterday to today I feel way better than last week," he said Tuesday.
Jul 22 - 11:58 PM

Jesus Guzman was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to back discomfort.

Consider him day-to-day for the time being. Jon Singleton took Guzman's spot at first base.
Jul 20 - 2:52 PM

Jesus Guzman got a rare start against a right-hander on Wednesday and went 3-for-4 in the shutout loss to the Nationals.

The Astros acquired Guzman to smack lefties around, but he's currently 7-for-18 against righties, compared to 6-for-38 versus southpaws. The trend doesn't figure to hold up, but with Marc Krauss proving to be a non-factor, the Astros may give Guzman more time against righties until Jon Singleton comes up.
Apr 30 - 11:25 PM

Jesus Guzman went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season against the Angels on Sunday.

Guzman was one of four Astros hitters to take Jered Weaver out on the day. Acquired from the Padres in December, Guzman should continue to get the lion's share of starts at first base going forward.
Apr 6 - 6:46 PM

Astros manager Bo Porter announced his starting lineup for Tuesday's season opener against the Yankees, and Jesus Guzman is getting the call at first base.

It's likely to be a regular arrangement when the team is facing a left-handed starter. The rest of the Astros lineup shakes out like this: Dexter Fowler CF, Robbie Grossman LF, Jose Altuve 2B, Jason Castro C, Jesus Guzman 1B, Chris Carter DH, Matt Dominguez 3B, L.J. Hoes RF, Jonathan Villar SS.
Mar 30 - 5:43 PM

Jesus Guzman went 0-for-2 on Monday and is 3-for-23 so far this spring.

The Astros probably won't be cutting Guzman after acquiring him from the Padres in December, but he's not off to the kind of start that would lead to much playing time against righties to begin the season.
Mar 17 - 3:49 PM

Astros avoided arbitration with OF/1B Jesus Guzman by agreeing to a one-year contract.

The financials aren't available, but Guzman will reportedly get close to the $1.3 million MLBTradeRumors.com had projected for him. He batted .226/.297/.378 last season for the Padres and could see plenty of playing time for the Astros in 2014 after coming over via trade.
