Athletics selected C Steve Hill from the Cardinals in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft.
Hill has a .513 career slugging percentage in the minor leagues and tallied 17 homers in just 87 games this past season at Triple-A Memphis. The 27-year-old was never going to get much of a shot in St. Louis. Thu, Dec 6, 2012 10:58:00 AM

Cardinals purchased the contract of C/1B/OF Steve Hill from Triple-A Memphis.

He'll replace the injured Matt Carpenter (oblique) on the active roster. The 27-year-old backstop was hitting .257/.303/.471 with four homers and a .774 OPS over 76 plate appearances this year at the Triple-A level. He has experience behind the plate, but is also capable of playing first base and the outfield.

Cardinals recalled C Steve Hill from Triple-A Memphis.

Hill provided the baseball world with a nice story in August when he hit his first major league home run during a short stint as an emergency backup to Yadier Molina. He doesn't carry any fantasy value, however.

The Cardinals are expected to recall catcher Steve Hill for this weekend's series against the Cubs.

Not a surprise now that Yadier Molina is expected to be shut down for the rest of the season with a right knee injury. Hill, 25, was 1-for-3 with his first major league home run in his only game with the Cardinals on August 15. He'll share time with Matt Pagnozzi and Bryan Anderson behind the plate.

Cardinals optioned C Steve Hill to Triple-A Memphis.

Hill was called up in an emergency transaction last week after Jason LaRue was injured during a melee with the Reds in Cincinnati. The 25-year-old Hill hit his first career major league home run on Sunday in a blowout loss to the Cubs, so he'll bring a nice souvenir back to the farm.

Cardinals purchased the contract of C Steve Hill from Double-A Springfield.

Hill will give the Cardinals an extra option behind the plate with Jason LaRue's status up in the air. The 24-year-old was batting .280/.352/.543 with 22 homers and 86 RBI with Double-A Springfield this season. Hill has spent most of his time behind the plate this season, but is capable of playing first base and the outfield, as well. He could carve out a career as a righty-bat off the bench in the major leagues.

Steve Hill went 3-for-4 and homered twice Monday for Double-A Springfield.

Hill is batting .394/.464/.727 in nine games. The 24-year-old spent more time playing other positions than he did catching last year, but he's been back behind the plate in most of his starts this season. He's also received time in the outfield corners. With no position to call his own, he's going to have to keep crushing the ball to have a chance at a career in the majors.

Steve Hill went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI for the Saguaros of the AFL on Saturday.

Hill, who has been catching in the AFL, is batting .289/.341/.605 in 10 games. The 2007 13th-round pick was used more frequently as a first baseman, DH and left fielder in the minors last season, and he has no future behind the plate for the Cardinals. Still, if he can hold his own back there, it'd help his chances of having a career in the majors as a part-time player.

Steve Hill made his Double-A debut on Saturday and homered for Springfield.

No official word yet, but it looks like Mark Hamilton went on the disabled list to make room for him. Hill lasted into the 13th round in last year's draft despite some terrific numbers at Stephen F. Austin. He's not a catcher, but his power seems legitimate enough. Of course, it's still hard to see how he fits into the Cardinals' future plans.
