Pirates acquired RHP Doug Mathis from the Marlins for a PTBNL or cash.

Pittsburgh's front office has been kept busy today making minor moves to protect the club's pitching staff after the bullpen was depleted in Saturday's blowout loss against Arizona. Mathis posted a 4.84 ERA for the Rangers in stints between 2008-2010. He hasn't reached the majors with a different organization. Mathis, who went 5-8 with a 3.85 ERA over 114 2/3 innings with Triple-A New Orleans this season, has been assigned by the Pirates to Triple-A Indianapolis. He's around to provide organizational depth.

Mathis posted a 4.83 ERA over 17 starts at the Triple-A level in 2011 before finishing the year in Korea. He appeared in 13 games for the Rangers in 2010, holding a 6.04 ERA and 10/11 K/BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old will function as organizational depth.
