Mathis posted a 4.07 ERA over 19 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket with the Red Sox this season. He's decided to earn a bigger paycheck overseas.

Mathis posted a 4.83 ERA over 17 starts at the Triple-A level in 2011 before finishing the year in Korea. He appeared in 13 games for the Rangers in 2010, holding a 6.04 ERA and 10/11 K/BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old will function as organizational depth.

The 27-year-old right-hander didn't fare much better in the minors, compiling a 5.66 ERA and 54/31 K/BB ratio over 89 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Doug Mathis was unable to throw batting practice Friday due to a blister.

The blister should be cleared up by next week. Mathis, 26, posted a 3.16 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 42 2/3 innings out of the Rangers' bullpen last season and is expected to serve as a middle reliever this year.
