Athletics optioned RHP Michael Ynoa to Low-A Beloit.
Ynoa is no longer a highly regarded prospect, but the Athletics are still expecting big things from him. He'll be forced to repeat at the Low-A level in 2013 after being limited to just 14 appearances there last season. Mar 10 - 10:39 PM

Athletics prospect right-hander Michael Ynoa hasn't reported to camp due to chicken pox.

Ynoa is expected to be stuck at home in the Dominican Republic for another 6-10 business days. The 21-year-old right-hander has been a huge disappointment since getting a $4.25 million bonus as a 16-year-old in 2008, but the A's still elected to protect him in the recent Rule 5 Draft.

Athletics purchased the contract of RHP Michael Ynoa from Low-A Vermont.

Oakland's big international signing back in 2008, Ynoa has had trouble staying healthy and has had little success in the lower minors for the A's. But, he's still just 21 years old and the A's weren't willing to risk losing him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Athletics prospect right-hander Michael Ynoa (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday in the Dominican Republic.

Ynoa, now 20 years old, hasn't pitched in a professional game since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2010. However, if he can make it through another bullpen session Friday, he could be cleared to make an appearance in the Dominican Instructional League. "He is free and easy with no problems," said Athletics' director of player development Keith Lieppman. "So far, so good." Barring any setbacks, he is expected to begin the 2012 season at extended spring training before being sent to Class A Vermont. Ynoa has been a major disappointment since receiving a record-setting $4.25 million signing bonus as a 16-year-old in 2008, but the good news is that he still has youth on his side.

Michael Ynoa (elbow surgery) is expected to begin throwing off a mound in July.

Ynoa underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in August of last season and is just now beginning to rehab. The 18-year-old prospect probably won't pitch in a live game until late August or early September. He still boasts great potential.

A's pitching prospect Michael Ynoa underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Tuesday.

The surgery is being called a success for now, but Ynoa has at least a year of recovery ahead. He struck out 11 batters over nine innings this season as a 17-year-old in the rookie Arizona League.

Michael Ynoa, who signed a $4.25 million deal with the A's as a 16-year-old in 2008, is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery on Aug. 24.

It's not official yet, but he's definitely having surgery and it's expected that he'll need the procedure, which would cost him most or all of 2011. Ynoa still has youth on his side, but he has a long way to go to live up to the hype that led to his record bonus.

A's pitching prospect Michael Inoa (elbow) might be cleared to begin a throwing program later this week.

Inoa (or Ynoa, depending who you ask) was diagnosed with a right elbow strain and some inflammation two weeks ago. He was ordered to rest, and rest he has. The 17-year-old should be back to delivering heat in the minor leagues by the middle of July.

A's pitching prospect Michael Inoa has been diagnosed with a right elbow strain and some inflammation.

Inoa is expected to miss at least a month. "He'll rest and have treatment with hopes of reducing the inflammation," assistant GM David Forst said in an e-mail. The 17-year-old was handed a record-setting $4.25 million signing bonus in July.

A's top pitching prospect Michael Inoa has been shut down indefinitely with a sore right elbow.

Inoa, 17, underwent an MRI this week that should tell us all a little more. "We're in the process of determining how severe it is," assistant GM David Forst said Saturday. Inoa (or Ynoa, depending who you ask) was given a record-setting $4.25 million signing bonus in July.

Athletics signed RHP Michel Inoa to a minor league contract.

The 16-year-old from the Dominican got a $4.25 million signing bonus, and reportedly turned down better offers from the Reds and Rangers due to Oakland's success developing young pitchers. One of the most highly touted international amateurs of the last decade, Inoa is expected to play in the Dominican Summer League this year. He may not be ready for full-season ball until 2010.

Baseball America reports that the Athletics will announce the signing of Dominican prospect Michel Inoa on Wednesday.

That's the first day he's officially allowed to sign with a major-league team. Baseball America calls Inoa the "top Dominican pitching prospect of the last decade," and Billy Beane has personally flown to see Inoa twice, with a third trip planned for Monday. Inoa is expected to get a $4.25 million signing bonus, the most ever for a non-Cuban amateur player.

A's general manager Billy Beane has traveled to the Dominican Republic in an attempt to sign 16-year-old Michael Inoa.

A 6-foot-7 right-hander who's expected to land at least $4 million as a signing bonus, Inoa is eligible to sign on July 2. Oakland's heavy involvement is somewhat surprising, but the Yankees and Mariners have also been linked to Inoa.

A scouting director told ESPN's Jayson Stark this week the Yankees and Mariners are already sending signals they're prepared to bid $3 million-$4 million for 16-year-old Michel Inoa.

Inoa, a right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic, will be available once the international signing period begins on July 2. The scouting director went on to tell Stark that he wouldn't be surprised if the eventual price tag reaches $6 million.
