David Cooper had a strong day at the plate as the Indians and White Sox played to a 2-2 tie on Friday, going 1-for-1 with a double and a sacrifice fly.
Cooper doubled and scored to get the Tribe on the board in the seventh inning, then plated the tying run with a sac fly in the eighth. He'll need to have many more days like this if he wants to win a bench spot on the Opening Day roster however. Mar 14 - 9:43 PM

Indians designated 1B David Cooper for assignment.

The move clears room on the 40-man roster for the arrival of Justin Sellers. The Indians are hoping that Cooper clears waivers, allowing them to keep him around as a non-roster invitee.

Indians signed 1B David Cooper to a one-year contract.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick was the first to report that a deal was close. Cooper appeared in just 13 minor league games (and no major league games) in 2013 due to a serious back issue, but the Indians like his potential and will have in camp next spring on a guaranteed deal. He'll presumably back up Nick Swisher at first base.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Indians are close to bringing back first baseman David Cooper.

Cooper was released by the Tribe in August and failed to latch on with a new team. He is recovered from back surgery and hoping to reestablish himself in 2014. The 26-year-old has a .750 career OPS in the major leagues.

David Cooper (back) is hoping to return at some point this season.

Cooper underwent surgery in April to have titanium screws placed into the T-7 and T-8 vertebrae in his back, so he's still a long way from returning. The Blue Jays released Cooper prior to the season, but he could be re-signed on a minor league deal. At the very least, Cooper plans to resume his playing career in 2014.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that David Cooper (back) may miss most of 2013.

Cooper is currently nursing a serious back injury, so this adds some more context to why he was given his release on Wednesday. The Jays have interest in re-signing him to a minor league deal, but he's a long way from returning.

Blue Jays released 1B David Cooper.

Cooper hasn't played this spring due to a lingering serious back injury and now the Jays have decided to cut ties. The 25-year-old batted .300 with four homers and a .788 OPS in 145 plate appearances in the majors last season. Assuming he gets back to full health at some point, he could do well with a change of scenery.

David Cooper will not report to Blue Jays' camp due to a back issue.

Cooper ended last season on the disabled list with a back problem, and evidently a winter of rest wasn't enough to heal. The first baseman is consulting with specialists before the next step is determined. Cooper batted .300 with a .788 OPS in 45 games last season for Toronto and would have been in line to compete for a bench job, but obviously that won't happen now.

David Cooper (back) is out of the starting lineup for the second straight day Friday.

Cooper is currently dealing with upper back spasms. He could be back in the lineup as as soon as Saturday, which would allow Adam Lind (back) to take some extra time on his rehab assignment.

David Cooper is out of the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Thursday due to upper back spasms.

Cooper first felt the discomfort after diving back into first base Wednesday night. "It's in that upper back and neck," Blue Jays manager John Farrell told reporters Thursday. "When he jarred himself, I don't want to say whiplash, but there was a jarring effect that he felt in the neck in addition to the area of spasms before."
