Athletics manager Bob Melvin announced Saturday that Brad Mills will start Tuesday's spring opener.
Jesse Chavez will make his first start on Wednesday while veteran southpaw Barry Zito will start on Thursday. All three hurlers are looking to compete for one of the final spots in the A's Opening Day rotation, but could also earn a spot as a long reliever. Feb 28 - 12:44 PM

Athletics signed LHP Brad Mills to a minor league contract.

Mills had a brief stint with the Athletics this season before finishing the year in the Blue Jays organization. The 29-year-old southpaw had a 2.01 ERA in 18 starts and two relief appearances in Triple-A this year and will function as rotation depth for Oakland.

Brad Mills has elected free agency.

The 29-year-old southpaw hurled 20 2/3 innings at the Major League level between the Athletics and Blue Jays in 2014, compiling a 9.15 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 19/11 K/BB ratio. With the ability to start and pitch in relief, there should be other squads willing to take a chance on him on a minor league deal.

Blue Jays sent LHP Brad Mills outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

He's accepted the assignment rather than declaring free agency. The left-hander has put up a 9.15 ERA over 20 2/3 innings at the major league level this season.

Blue Jays designated LHP Brad Mills for assignment.

It's the third time since the beginning of July (and the second time by the Blue Jays) that he's been designated for assignment. Mills will have the opportunity to declare free agency if he clears waivers.

Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Brad Mills from Triple-A Buffalo.

After Sunday's 19-inning affair against the Tigers, the Blue Jays are in desperate need for a fresh arm or two in the bullpen. He owns a 7.85 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 18 1/3 innings on the year.

Blue Jays designated LHP Brad Mills for assignment.

As expected, the move clears a spot for Aaron Sanchez on the active roster. Mills was just claimed off waivers from the A's last week and could soon be on the move again.

Brad Mills is expected to be designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

The move will clear a spot for top prospect Aaron Sanchez, who is expected to join the team's bullpen. Mills was rocked for eight runs over two innings Monday night against the Red Sox.

Making his Blue Jays debut, Brad Mills was pummeled for eight runs in two innings of relief by the Red Sox on Monday.

Mills had two quality starts in three tries for the A's before the Jeff Samardzija-Jason Hammel deal made him expendable; his one failure in that span was also against Boston. The Blue Jays merely paid the waiver price to bring him in last week, so one or two more bad outings and he'll likely be sent packing again.

Blue Jays claimed LHP Brad Mills off waivers from the Athletics.

Mills was designated for assignment by Oakland earlier this month. The 29-year-old left-hander had a 4.41 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 16 1/3 innings with the A's, but he could eventually see some starts in Toronto.

Athletics designated LHP Brad Mills for assignment.

Mills, who was acquired from the Brewers for one dollar last month, posted a 4.41 ERA over three starts during his brief stay with the Athletics. He's not needed now that the A's have added Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the fold.

Brad Mills fell to 1-1, allowing three runs over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers.

Make that back-to-back quality starts for the lefty, recently acquired from the Brewers for a buck. He allowed six hits -- including a two-run home run to J.D. Martinez -- while walking three and striking out six. Mills now has a 4.41 ERA, a 1.59 WHIP, and a 14/7 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings. He'll go up against the Blue Jays at home when he takes his next turn in the rotation.

Brad Mills earned his first win of the season, allowing three runs over 6 1/3 innings as the Athletics defeated the Mets 8-5 on Wednesday.

The one-dollar man shut the Mets out through six innings, relenting three runs only to his final batter. Lucas Duda pinch-hit with one out in the seventh and belted a three-run home run to right-center to end Mills' night. Overall, the lefty allowed nine hits, didn't issue a walk, and struck out four. Mills will go up against the Tigers in his next start.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Brad Mills will remain in the starting rotation for now.

Mills, who was acquired from the Brewers for one dollar earlier this week, allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings against the Red Sox on Friday. However, the shaky outing won't change the team's plan. The soft-tossing lefty isn't worth considering outside of AL-only leagues.
