Dirk Hayhurst will spend the 2012 season in Italy.
The 30-year-old right-hander struggled to find much interest on the free agent market this offseason after posting a 4.12 ERA and 43/21 K/BB ratio over 59 innings with Triple-A Durham in 2011. Rather than join another major league club's Triple-A affiliate, he's decided to travel to Europe and spend the summer in the relaxed environment of Italian professional baseball. Rays released RHP Dirk Hayhurst.

Hayhurst, 30, posted a 4.12 ERA and 43/21 K/BB ratio over 59 innings with Triple-A Durham this season. The talented author/right-hander will likely get a minor league deal with a spring training invite somewhere.

Dirk Hayhurst was placed on the disabled list with Triple-A Durham with a sore right elbow.

The 30-year-old right-hander had a 2.42 ERA and 20/4 K/BB ratio over his first four starts this season. There's no current timetable for his return.

Rays signed RHP Dirk Hayhurst to a minor league contract.

Hayhurst sat out for all of 2010 following shoulder surgery, but he's rehabbed now and ready to compete for a bullpen gig in spring camp. The Rays may ask him to begin the year with reps at the Triple-A level.

Blue Jays activated RHP Dirk Hayhurst from the 60-day disabled list.

Hayhurst missed all of the 2010 season after undergoing major shoulder surgery in February. He's been throwing bullpen sessions since August and should be ready for live action by the start of spring training.

Dirk Hayhurst (shoulder) threw a bullpen on Wednesday and felt good.

Hayhurst is not fantasy-relevant, but he's a good writer, has a book and a website, and is an interesting character. In fact, the reliever broke the news of his bullpen session on his own Twitter page.

Blue Jays placed RHP Dirk Hayhurst on the 60-day disabled lost following shoulder surgery.

Hayhurst is expected to miss 4-6 months after having the fraying in his labrum repaired and the move makes room on the 40-man roster for Jose Molina.

Dirk Hayhurst underwent surgery Friday to repair fraying in the labrum of his right shoulder and is expected to miss 4-6 months.

Ouch. When news first broke of the scheduled surgery last week, the Blue Jays called it "exploratory" and were positive about a possible short recovery time. But chances are Hayhurst won't pitch at all in the first half of the 2010 season. The 27-year-old right-hander had a 2.78 ERA and a 13/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings of relief for Toronto last season.

Dirk Hayhurst is scheduled to undergo exploratory surgery to evaluate the status of his sore right shoulder.

It's not exactly clear when the soreness first came about. Hayhurst, a 27-year-old righty, had a 2.78 ERA and 13/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 frames for the Jays last season and went 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 48/12 K/BB ratio for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. The procedure will almost certainly hurt his chances of being ready by the start of spring training.

Blue Jays recalled RHP Dirk Hayhurst from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Hayhurst returns to a 1.72 ERA over 15 2/3 innings logged with the Blue Jays earlier this season. The 27-year-old right-hander was 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 48/12 K/BB ratio for the 51s.

Blue Jays optioned RHP Dirk Hayhurst to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Hayhurst was called to the bigs in early June after posting a 29/10 K/BB ratio for Las Vegas. He allowed 25 baserunners in 15 2/3 innings with the Jays.

Blue Jays recalled RHP Dirk Hayhurst from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Hayhurst failed to capture a spot in the bullpen during spring training, but posted a 29/10 K/BB ratio at Las Vegas and the Jays could ignore him no longer. He'll work in middle relief.

Blue Jays re-signed RHP Dick Hayhurst to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Hayhurst was removed from the 40-man roster this week to make room for Matt Bush. He'll be a long shot to win a bullpen spot.

Blue Jays designated RHP Dick Hayhurst for assignment.

The Jays cut a pitcher they picked up from the Padres in order to make room for another pitcher acquired from San Diego. Hayhurst never belonged on the 40-man roster. He'll likely be invited to camp as a non-roster player once he clears waivers.

Blue Jays claimed RHP Dirk Hayhurst off waivers from the Padres.

It's a minor move, of course, but it's still surprising to see Hayhurst get claimed, especially after the 27-year-old had a 9.72 ERA in three starts and seven relief appearances for San Diego. He's worth rooting for, but it's very unlikely that he'll turn into a major league reliever.
