Donovan Tate has reported to the Padres' spring training complex in Arizona.
Tate did not show up to camp this past February due to what was described as a personal issue, but he was apparently keeping in contact with the Padres this entire time and has now been allowed back into the organization. "I left baseball in order to gain a grasp on some personal issues in my life," the former third overall pick wrote in a statement to the media on Tuesday. Jun 18 - 5:11 PM

Padres prospect outfielder Donavan Tate will not report to minor league camp on time due to personal reasons.

No word on when he'll report. Tate has largely been a bust since being selected No. 3 overall, including a series of injuries and a drug suspension. The 21-year-old actually stayed healthy for a change last season, but he batted just .226 with a .620 OPS between Class A Fort Wayne and High-A Lake Elsinore.

Padres prospect outfielder Donavan Tate is done for the season with a wrist injury.

Tate returned three weeks ago after serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a "drug of abuse." The 20-year-old has sustained a series of injuries since being selected No. 3 overall in 2009, but delivered a promising .288/.410/.411 batting line to go along with an .821 OPS and 19 stolen bases over 178 plate appearances this season between Low-A Eugene and Class A Fort Wayne. We can't call him a bust yet.

Padres outfield prospect Donovan Tate was reinstated Sunday after serving a 50-game suspension.

Tate was handed the 50-game punishment in June after testing positive a second time for a "drug of abuse." The young outfielder's career is off to an ugly start, but he's only 20 years old and can still turn it all around. He's played in just 43 professional games to this point.

Tate hasn't done much to sway the opinion of those who believe the Padres' first-round picks are cursed. The 20-year-old has played just 43 professional games since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2009. He has been limited to just 17 games this season due to knee and shoulder injuries.

Tate is a great athlete and projects as an eventual big league starting center fielder, but the No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft has had trouble avoiding injuries. He missed part of the 2010 season after breaking his jaw in an ATV accident.

Finally. Since he signed with the Padres last summer, the 19-year-old has underwent sports hernia surgery, sustained a broken jaw in an ATV accident and missed the start of this season due to a sprained left shoulder. It won't stop those who have said that the team's No. 1 picks are cursed, but the expectations are still sky high for the former prep sensation. He has the potential to emerge as an elite power-speed contributor, but the Padres are probably just thrilled to finally see their investment on the field.

Tate's professional debut will have to wait. The No. 3 pick suffered the injury while diving for a ball this week. He's hoping to shake the recent trend of San Diego's first-round failures, but the 19-year-old has already underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia surgery, followed by a broken jaw due to an ATV accident. There's still tons of hope for the former prep star, but he's not off to a good start. Padres prospect Jaff Decker, who is currently bothered by a hamstring injury, will keep him company in extended spring training.

"Everything is healed," Tate said, who had surgery to repair a pubic bone injury in October, then underwent surgery for a broken jaw after an ATV accident in November. "I feel like it was a setback last year with the surgery and not getting to play. It's been beneficial to get out here early and the hang of things before it starts getting crazy." Tate, 19, was the No. 3 overall pick of last June's first-year player draft. Though he has yet to make his pro debut, he was recently named the organization's top prospect by Baseball America. He'll likely stick around for extended spring training before joining the club's Arizona League rookie team.

And San Diego's first-round curse continues. Following the ATV accident, Tate’s jaw was reportedly fitted with a plate and wired shut. Tate was the No. 3 overall pick of June's first-year player draft. He already suffered a setback in his professional career after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia in October. The Padres hope he will be ready by spring training.

Tate, 19, underwent surgery on October 7 and has spent the last month resting at the Padres training base on a rehab assignment. "I was really excited and then I got hurt," said Tate. "It's been very humbling. But I'll be healthy in the spring. I'm going to hit the ground running. I'm going to work harder than anyone expects." Tate missed out on a chance to play in the Arizona Fall Instructional League, but he should be fully recovered by spring training.

According to Jim Callis of Baseball America, Padres top pick Donavan Tate has been sighted in San Diego and is expected to sign soon.

Tate, selected third overall, will be handed a signing bonus worth around $6 million. He was offered a scholarship to play football and baseball at the University of North Carolina next year, but will obviously turn that down.
