Brewers designated INF Edwin Maysonet for assignment.

The Brewers needed to clear two spots on the 40-man roster after Friday's Zack Greinke trade, and Maysonet was one of the causalities. The 30-year-old hit .250/.297/.350 with one homer and four RBI in 30 games with the Brewers this season. Assuming he passes through waivers, he will continue to serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Nashville.

Maysonet was optioned earlier this week when Cody Ransom was claimed off waivers. He'll be used as infield depth with Cesar Izturis (hamstring) on the disabled list.

Edwin Maysonet went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a walk in Saturday's win over the Cubs.

The grand slam was set up when Cubs manager Dale Sveum decided to walk Travis Ishikawa intentionally to load the bases. It was just his second career home run. Maysonet made the start at second base on Saturday after Rickie Weeks was hit in the left wrist by a pitch during Friday's game. X-rays came back negative and Weeks is considered day-to-day, so Maysonet isn't worth owning in fantasy leagues.

He will also receive an invite to spring training. Maysonet, 30, batted .290/.347/.386 with three homers, 39 RBI and a .733 OPS over 436 plate appearances with Triple-A Nashville this season. The Brewers don't have much depth at the shortstop position, but it would be surprising if he actually makes the Opening Day roster.

The Astros will try to get Edwin Maysonet some action in the outfield this spring.

The 28 year old is hoping to make the team as a utility player despite a career .711 OPS in the minors. He can handle every infield position including being quite adept at shortstop, a position in flux for Houston. If he can put together a strong showing with the bat, a bench spot may be secured.
