Athletics activated outfielder Ben Copeland from the 15-day disabled list.

Copeland is very likely to prove to be a waste of a roster spot, but what's one more? The Rule 5 pick from the Giants organization hit .261/.334/.417 in 372 at-bats for Double-A Connecticut last season. He had gone 6-for-13 on his rehab assignment after going down this spring with a sprained shoulder.

Athletics placed outfielder Ben Copeland on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with a sprained left shoulder.

Copeland, a Rule 5 pick from the Giants, was never a threat to make the A's, but the team will be able to keep him around because of the injury he sustained last month.

Athletics selected outfielder Ben Copeland from the Giants with the 10th pick in the Rule 5 draft.

Copeland hit .261/.334/.417 in 372 at-bats for Double-A Connecticut and .341/.417/.388 in 85 at-bats for Triple-A Fresno as a 24-year-old last season. He stole 24 bases in all. An average defensive center fielder and a left-handed hitter, he has a chance at a career as a reserve outfielder. If the A's carry him, it would likely be at the expense of another outfielder they picked up from the Giants, Rajai Davis.
