Yankees claimed RHP Sam Demel off waivers from the Astros.

Demel made one appearance with the Diamondbacks last season, but spent the majority of the season at Triple-A, posting a 4.07 ERA and 75/22 K/BB ratio over 66 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander could turn into a decent bullpen piece.

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of RHP Sam Demel from Triple-A Reno.

Demel has registered a 4.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 66/17 K/BB ratio in 58 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. He will serve as a middle reliever for the Snakes.

He was sent out Monday as the D-Backs made room for new arrivals Jason Marquis and Brad Ziegler. Demel, 25, has a 3.60 ERA and 15/11 K/BB ratio over 25 innings this season. He should be back eventually.

He'll replace the injured J.J. Putz on the active roster. Demel, 25, had 1.72 and 10/7 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings before landing on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis in May.

Sam Demel (shoulder) pitched a perfect inning Friday in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Reno.

He'll make another appearance for the Saturday and could be activated from the DL early next week. The D'Backs have been searching for someone to help in the seventh inning before setup man David Hernandez and closer J.J. Putz, and Demel, who posted a 1.72 ERA in 15 2/3 innings before his injury, could be the answer.

Sam Demel (shoulder) is expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Reno.

Demel will make a second appearance on Sunday before being reevaluated. He's been out since late May with tendinitis in his shoulder but appears to be close to rejoining the Diamondbacks bullpen.

Sam Demel (shoulder) threw a bullpen session at "about 75 percent" Tuesday.

It was his first since being shut down earlier this month after he still had soreness following his first bullpen session. "It went really well," Demel said of the bullpen. "Kind of went at low intensity, about 75 percent but I feel good." He'll have another bullpen session Friday. "We'll see how it goes the next time," Demel said. "We'll crank up the intensity a little bit and go from there."

Sam Demel (shoulder) on Saturday will throw his first bullpen session since landing on the disabled list.

Demel has been sidelined for the last 12 games due to tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. He'll likely throw an additional bullpen session or two before going out on a short rehab assignment. The D'Backs are hoping to get Demel back by the middle of the month.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Sam Demel (shoulder) will require more than the minimum stay on the disabled list.

It's no surprise, as Demel is recovering from a shoulder injury and the D'Backs want to take it slow with him. It's not clear exactly how long he'll be out, but we should see him sometime next month.

Demel has done a nice job of preventing runs this season and currently boasts a 1.72 ERA. The Diamondbacks will hope he makes a quick return to their bullpen.
