Twins purchased the contract of RHP Casey Fien from Triple-A Rochester.
He'll take the roster spot of Nick Blackburn, who was demoted to the minors. Fien signed a minor league deal with the Twins over the winter and had a 4.30 ERA and 42/14 K/BB ratio over 46 innings at the Triple-A level. Twins signed RHP Casey Fien to a minor league contract.

He'll also get an invite to spring training. Fien was released by the Astros last June after compiling a 4.81 ERA and 24/8 K/BB ratio over 24 1/3 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 28-year-old right-hander has an 8.36 ERA in 11 big league appearances, all with the Tigers. He'll likely serve as organizational depth in 2012.

The move was made in order to clear a roster spot for Jake Goebber, who was promoted from Double-A Corpus Christi. Fien held a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 24 1/3 innings but also posted a 4.81 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. He might shut things down for the year and try to latch on with another organization over the offseason.

Fien, 27, posted a 2.60 ERA and 44/13 K/BB ratio over 62 1/3 innings with Triple-A Toledo this season. He continues to put up good numbers in the minors, but it hasn't translated to success in the majors quite yet. Fien has an 8.36 ERA and 9/6 K/BB ratio in 11 big league appearances.

Fien was designated for assignment on Sunday. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed three runs over 2 2/3 innings with the Tigers this season, but is sporting a 2.33 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 31 appearances with the Mud Hens. He'll probably be back in September.

Fien will take Brandon Inge's roster spot until the Tigers figure out how they want to go about replacing the injured veteran third baseman. Fien, 26, has thrown two scoreless innings of relief for Detroit this season.

Tigers purchased the contract of RHP Casey Fien from Triple-A Toledo.

Fien was designated for assignment by Detroit this spring and spent a bit of time with the Red Sox then Blue Jays before finally settling back with the Tigers in late March. He's thrown together a 2.29 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 39 1/3 innings of relief for Toledo and will pitch in middle relief in the bigs.

No, we're not running reruns, Fien really has returned to Detroit. He was designated for assignment by the Tigers to clear a roster spot for Johnny Damon and claimed by the Red Sox, released by the Sox and claimed by the Blue Jays, released by the Jays and now back to the Tigers.

He just can't find a home. Fien was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox earlier this month. This, after Boston claimed him off waivers from the Tigers only days earlier. Still, with a 3.04 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 153 minor league relief appearances, expect someone to snatch him up pretty quickly.

He will report to Boston's camp. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 7.94 ERA in nine appearances with the Tigers last season, but has a 3.04 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 153 minor league relief appearances. He averaged 10.2 K/9 with Triple-A Toledo last season while exhibiting excellent command. Fien has been impressive on almost every minor league level as a bullpen arm and should eventually settle nicely into a middle relief role -- in Boston or elsewhere. He was designated for assignment by Detroit last week to make room for Johnny Damon on the team's 40-man roster.
