Pirates optioned OF Jaff Decker to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Decker was only up in the major leagues for a couple of days and went hitless in three plate appearances for the Bucs. The 24-year-old was batting just .238/.339/.356 with 26 strikeouts in 30 games this season at Triple-A. He is no longer considered a prospect.

The Pirates are going to call up outfielder Jaff Decker from Triple-A Indianapolis for Sunday's game.

It should be a lot of fun if the Pirates try to justify any performance reasons for picking Decker over Gregory Polanco. While Decker has posted nice numbers in the past, he's currently hitting just .238//339/.356 with one homer in 101 at-bats for Indianapolis. Of course, it makes more sense to call him up than Polanco if they only want an outfielder for a couple of days -- with Travis Snider suspended and Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen hurting, they definitely need the body -- but there's little doubt Polanco would be up by now if not for the Super Two factor.

Pirates GM Neal Huntington said new acquisition Jaff Decker can play all three outfield positions and has a chance to break camp with the club next spring.

Huntington told the press that Decker appealed to the club's brass from both an analytic and a scouting perspective. Pittsburgh's boss likes Decker's ability to control the strike zone. The 23-year-old Decker, the 42nd overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, hit .286/.381/.443 with 10 homers and 40 RBI in 105 games this past summer for the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in Tucson. He boasts a career .402 OBP on the farm.

Decker and Mikolas were both designated for assignment by the Padres last week and will now get new life with Pittsburgh. Decker, 23, was the 42nd overall pick in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He hit .286/.381/.443 with 10 homers and 40 RBI in 105 games this past summer for the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in Tucson.
