Indians re-signed INF/OF Michael Martinez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
For some reason, Indians' skipper Terry Francona loves the veteran utility man, so he'll get another chance to provide depth for the Tribe. Martinez is a career .194/.243/.261 hitter in 621 plate appearances at the big league level. Sat, Dec 2, 2017 03:47:00 PM

Manager Terry Francona just can't quit Michael Martinez. The 34-year-old will be in Triple-A Columbus as utility depth.

Michael Martinez has elected free agency.

Martinez cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on Monday. Because he's been DFA'd twice this year, Martinez could choose between a minor league assignment or becoming a free agent. The 34-year-old is only a .194 career hitter in the big leagues but should find work elsewhere as a utility man.

Rays designated INF/OF Michael Martinez for assignment.

The move clears a roster spot for Trevor Plouffe, who was acquired from the Athletics over the weekend. Martinez went 2-for-26 with 10 strikeouts during his month-long stay with Tampa Bay and is now a .194/.243/.261 career hitter over parts of seven seasons at the major league level. He turns 35 years old in September.

Michael Martinez has not been designated for assignment by the Rays.

In fact Martinez has been added back to the 25-man roster. It was announced late Tuesday that the veteran utility had drawn a DFA, but the Rays suddenly want him again with Brad Miller (groin) hitting the disabled list Wednesday. Martinez, 34, is a brutal .195/.243/.262 career hitter at the major league level.

Rays designated INF/OF Michael Martinez for assignment.

Martinez had one hit and nine strikeouts in 21 plate appearances with the Rays, who acquired him from the Indians on May 18 for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The veteran utilityman owns a .195/.243/.262 career batting line at the major league level.

Rays acquired INF/OF Michael Martinez from the Indians for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Indians designated INF/OF Michael Martinez for assignment.

Martinez actually has four hits in 11 at-bats this season, but he's played poorly with the glove and that's the reason he was on the roster. He could clear waivers and go to Triple-A Columbus for depth.

Indians purchased the contract of INF/OF Michael Martinez from Triple-A Columbus.

He did it by hitting .357 during Cactus League play. The 34-year-old was a jack of all trades last season, starting games at second base, third, shortstop and all three outfield positions. Despite hitting well in spring training, Martinez is just a .197 lifetime hitter in the big leagues.

Indians re-signed INF/OF Michael Martinez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Martinez was pushed off the Indians' 40-man roster in late November and he'll have to earn that spot back with a good showing in camp next spring. The veteran utilityman batted .238/.267/.307 this past year between Boston and Cleveland. He's forever trivia-relevant as the final batter in the Indians' World Series loss to the Cubs.

Indians sent INF/OF Michael Martinez outright to Triple-A Columbus.

The Indians initially scooped Martinez up off waivers from the Red Sox in early August. The 34-year-old received a decent little chunk of playing time after the Indians added him to their squad, hitting .242/.265/.316 with four doubles, a homer and four RBI across 95 at-bats. It should be noted that while Martinez has been outrighted off the 40-man roster, the Indians are interested in potentially re-signing him to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Indians claimed INF/OF Michael Martinez off waivers from the Red Sox.

Martinez will return to Cleveland less than a month after the Indians traded him to the Red Sox for cash considerations. He collected one hit in six at-bats for Boston before he was waived to make room for top prospect Andrew Benintendi. The 32-year-old utility man has started at five different positions this year.

Red Sox designated INF/OF Michael Martinez for assignment.

Top prospect Andrew Benintendi will take his spot on the 40-man roster on Tuesday. Martinez was acquired from the Indians last month and went 1-for-6 over four games. He's expendable now that Brock Holt is expected to move into a utility role.

Red Sox purchased the contract of INF/OF Michael Martinez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

He'll function as a utility player for the Red Sox in the wake of the injury to Brock Holt. He provides nice depth with his ability to play multiple positions.

Red Sox acquired INF/OF Michael Martinez from the Indians in exchange for cash considerations.

Martinez was removed from the 40-man roster recently and now finds himself in another organization. The utility player will give the Red Sox depth at multiple positions.
