Cardinals signed LHP Clay Zavada to a minor league contract.

Zavada was released by the Reds after he failed to make the team out of spring training. The 27-year-old southpaw last appeared in the majors in 2009, when he held a 3.35 ERA and 9.2 K/9 rate for the D'Backs. He could eventually be an option as a second lefty in the bullpen after J.C. Romero was released earlier this week.

Reds released LHP Clay Zavada.

Zavada was one of the later cuts in spring training, but he ended up not making the team and will now look to catch on elsewhere. The lefty pitched pretty well for the D'Backs in 2009 but hasn't appeared in a major league game since.

Reds signed LHP Clay Zavada to a minor league contract.

He'll also get an invite to spring training. Zavada last pitched in the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2009, posting a 3.35 ERA over 49 relief appearances. After missing the entire 2010 season following Tommy John surgery, the 27-year-old left-hander posted a 3.43 ERA and 46/21 K/BB ratio over 60 1/3 innings with Triple-A Reno last season.

Diamondbacks reassigned LHP Clay Zavada, INF Andy Tracy and OF David Winfree to Triple-A Reno.

Zavada was the only one of the three that had a chance to win a roster spot, and that's assuming he was healthy. He was not, having dealt with shoulder soreness that kept him from appearing in a game.

Clay Zavada (shoulder) is expected to return to Diamondbacks camp Wednesday.

Zavada did not show up to a scheduled physical on Monday and some in the D'Backs organization thought he might be considering retirement. Apparently, that's not the case. "He just needed a couple of days to figure out what was going on with his shoulder," Zavada's agent, Barry Meister, said Tuesday. The left-hander will continue to compete for a bullpen job if deemed healthy.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Clay Zavada (elbow) is unsure whether he wants to continue pitching.

Zavada missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery and is "having some doubts on wanting to go through this again," according to Towers. The southpaw skipped out on a physical last night and told the team's training staff about his feelings. He was signed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, but it's unclear whether he has the desire to continue his career.

Diamondbacks sent LHP Clay Zavada outright to Triple-A Reno.

Zavada had a nice rookie season in 2009 but missed the entire 2010 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late May. The D-backs have already begun trying to sign Zavada to a minor league deal. He'll miss the beginning of next season but should be able to contribute at some point.

Clay Zavada will miss the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The mustached one put up a 3.35 ERA over 49 relief appearances with the Diamondbacks in '09, but started this season with Triple-A Reno, allowing 10 runs over three appearances (30.00 ERA). He'll hope to contribute at some point next season.

Diamondbacks optioned LHP Clay Zavada to Triple-A Reno.

Zavada was the last man out for the Diamondbacks, who elected to keep lefty Jordan Norberto. Zavada didn't help himself much with his spring performance. He walked a batter an inning and allowed 10 runs, eight earned, in his nine innings of work. Still, he's just a phone call away in Reno and will be back up if someone in the bullpen gets hurt.

Clay Zavada is working on a curveball in order to improve his effectiveness against left-handed hitters.

"I actually had a really good curveball in college," Zavada said. "I just got away from throwing it." The 25-year-old southpaw gave up a .284 batting average against left-handed hitters last year. He held right-handers, conversely, to a .205 mark thanks to his "Bugs Bunny changeup."

Diamondbacks recalled LHP Clay Zavada from Double-A Mobile.

He owns a 1-0 record, 2.60 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through 17 1/3 innings of relief work. Arizona is desperate for arms at the moment with plenty used during their doubleheader Wednesday and with Scott Schoeneweis leaving to deal with the death of his wife. This also means it's like just a short-term stint for Zavada.
