Brewers optioned OF/1B Shane Peterson to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Peterson posted an impressive .308/.381/.460 batting line in 137 games last season for the A's Triple-A affiliate. The former second-round pick of the Cardinals is pretty well buried on the Brewers' depth chart, but he could get a look at some point if there are few injuries on the major league roster. Brewers claimed OF/1B Shane Peterson off waivers from the Cubs.

Peterson has been the proverbial hot potato over the last two weeks, as he's bounced from the Athletics to the Cubs and now to the Brewers. He's a second-round pick who has flashed a decent bat in the minors, hitting .308/.381/.460 in Triple-A in 2014. While he doesn't have much major league experience, he's still just 26 and his bat should eventually offer him chances at the next level.

Cubs claimed OF/1B Shane Peterson off waivers from the Athletics.

Peterson had been designated for assignment last week. The former second-round pick has limited experience in the majors but batted .308/.381/.460 this past season at Triple-A. He could be an option for the Cubs' bench.

Athletics designated 1B Shane Peterson for assignment.

Peterson was acquired from the Cardinals in 2009 as part of the Matt Holliday trade but only logged eight plate appearances for the A's. The 26-year-old did post a decent .308/.381/.460 batting line this past season at Triple-A, so he could draw interest on waivers.

Athletics optioned INF Shane Peterson to Triple-A Sacramento; reassignned LHP Andrew Werner, RHPs Jose Flores and Jeremy McBryde and C Bruce Maxwell to minor league camp.

No real surprises among the bunch here, as is typical with early spring roster cut-downs. The 26-year-old Peterson had a solid year at Triple-A Sacramento in 2013, slashing .251/.358/.387 with 12 homers, 79 RBI and 17 stolen bases. His versatility could lead to him getting a chance with the A's at some point during the 2014 season.

Athletics optioned OF/1B Shane Peterson to Triple-A Sacramento.

Peterson was up for a couple days while Brandon Moss was on paternity leave, picking up a hit and an RBI in seven at-bats. He should get another chance this summer.

Athletics recalled OF Shane Peterson from Triple-A Sacramento.

Peterson will provide some extra depth while Brandon Moss is the paternity leave list. He's unlikely to be fantasy relevant during his brief stay with the club.

Shane Peterson will be called up from Triple-A Sacramento if Brandon Moss is placed on the paternity leave list.

Moss' wife hasn't had the baby yet, so the Athletics haven't made a roster move. John Jaso, Josh Donaldson and Jed Lowrie will function as first base depth Friday if Moss is unavailable and Peterson isn't added to the roster.

Athletics purchased the contract of OF Shane Peterson from Triple-A Sacramento.

He's now protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Peterson, 24, batted .326/.460/.510 with nine homers and 13 steals between Double-A and Triple-A in 2012. He's viewed as an extra outfielder but could make his debut sometime next season.

Athletics acquired OF Shane Peterson from the Cardinals in the Matt Holliday trade.

Peterson, 21, has just one home run this year in Double-A Springfield. Since power was the missing ingredient for Peterson coming into the season, this is problematic. He does get on base a ton, so his acquisition by Billy Beane shouldn't come as any surprise.

In four at-bats, Shane Peterson doubled three times and tripled Thursday for Single-A Palm Beach.

Peterson, a Long Beach State product, doesn't impress scouts, but the Cardinals invested a second-round pick in him last year and opted to have him open this year as the cleanup hitter for their FSL affiliate. Defense isn't a strong suit -- he'd probably fare quite a bit better at first base than in the outfield -- so he'll need to show plenty of power in order to get a job in the majors someday. His on-base skills aren't in question.
