Athletics recalled OF Shane Peterson from Triple-A Sacramento.

Peterson will provide some extra depth while Brandon Moss is the paternity leave list. He's unlikely to be fantasy relevant during his brief stay with the club.

Shane Peterson will be called up from Triple-A Sacramento if Brandon Moss is placed on the paternity leave list.

Moss' wife hasn't had the baby yet, so the Athletics haven't made a roster move. John Jaso, Josh Donaldson and Jed Lowrie will function as first base depth Friday if Moss is unavailable and Peterson isn't added to the roster.

Athletics purchased the contract of OF Shane Peterson from Triple-A Sacramento.

He's now protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Peterson, 24, batted .326/.460/.510 with nine homers and 13 steals between Double-A and Triple-A in 2012. He's viewed as an extra outfielder but could make his debut sometime next season.

Athletics acquired OF Shane Peterson from the Cardinals in the Matt Holliday trade.

Peterson, 21, has just one home run this year in Double-A Springfield. Since power was the missing ingredient for Peterson coming into the season, this is problematic. He does get on base a ton, so his acquisition by Billy Beane shouldn't come as any surprise.

In four at-bats, Shane Peterson doubled three times and tripled Thursday for Single-A Palm Beach.

Peterson, a Long Beach State product, doesn't impress scouts, but the Cardinals invested a second-round pick in him last year and opted to have him open this year as the cleanup hitter for their FSL affiliate. Defense isn't a strong suit -- he'd probably fare quite a bit better at first base than in the outfield -- so he'll need to show plenty of power in order to get a job in the majors someday. His on-base skills aren't in question.
