Brewers and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.
It's a split contract, as he'll make that much if he's in the majors but his salary will fall to $275,000 if he's in the minors. Nieuwenhuis hit just .209/.324/.385 for the Brewers last season but did pop 13 homers. Dec 2 - 12:40 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (abdomen) grounded out as a pinch-hitter on Sunday against the Rockies.

It was the first plate appearance for Nieuwenhuis since he strained his abdomen in mid-September. He had a decent year as a utility outfielder with the Brewers and should be brought back in a similar role for 2017. The 29-year-old is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis feels better after receiving a cortisone injection in his strained abdomen.

He's hoping to return at some point this year but that seems a bit ambitious with only eight games left on the schedule. Nieuwenhuis has mostly been a non-factor this year, hitting just .210 with 13 HR, 44 RBI and eight steals.
Sep 24 - 5:13 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been diagnosed with a sports hernia.

He's been out for nearly a week with what the Brewers had been calling an abdominal strain, but now we have a more specific diagnosis. Nieuwenhuis was given a cortisone shot Wednesday and still hopes to make it back this season, but it doesn't look like a given.
Sep 22 - 5:53 PM

An MRI taken Monday on Kirk Nieuwenhuis' abdomen turned up negative.

Nieuwenhuis has been on the shelf since last Friday with abdominal discomfort, but it sounds like he could return to action at some point this week. The outfielder is slashing .210/.325/.386 with 13 home runs and eight stolen bases in 124 games this season for Milwaukee.
Sep 20 - 5:34 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (abdomen) will miss the remainder of the weekend series against the Cubs.

He left Friday's game with a abdominal strain that has apparently been bothering him for a few days already. With Keon Broxton also injured on Friday the Brewers will roll with a depleted outfield for the next few days.
Sep 16 - 6:24 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis left Friday's game against the Cubs with an abdominal strain.

That's after Keon Broxton departed with a fractured wrist. The Brewers were forced to move Domingo Santana to center field, a position he hadn't played all season. It's unclear how much, if any, time Nieuwenhuis might miss.
Sep 16 - 5:49 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer Wednesday as the Brewers beat the Cardinals 3-1.

Nieuwenhuis cares little for singles, but he's been good for 13 homers and 52 walks in 307 at-bats while playing solid defense in center field this year. That's made him a nice little player for the Brewers. Still, he should play less in September with Keon Broxton needing at-bats and Domingo Santana back from the disabled list.
Aug 31 - 11:13 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run home run, his 12th of the season, in Thursday's loss to the Pirates.

Nieuwenhuis thwarted Chad Kuhl's shutout bid with the two-run dong in the seventh inning. Keon Broxton's resurgence, coupled with Hernan Perez' emergence and the presence of Ryan Braun in left field, has left Nieuwenhuis as sort of the odd man out in the Brewers' outfield lately, but he's still found plenty of at-bats with Braun's injury issues. The 29-year-old is hitting .214/.327/.405 in 109 games overall.
Aug 26 - 12:24 AM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis collected a three-run homer and a double in Thursday's loss.

Of course he did; he was facing the Cubs. He's batting .353 and has hit five of his 11 homers against the Cubs this year. Nieuwenhuis is probably due less playing time going forward, since the Brewers want to see what they have in Keon Broxton in center field. Still, there are seven more games coming up against the Cubs next month...
Aug 18 - 5:52 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI as the Brewers won on Saturday.

He hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and followed that up with a three-run bomb to put the game out of reach in the eighth inning. He is now batting .207 with seven homers and seven steals in 84 games.
Jul 23 - 10:26 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis swatted a go-ahead two-run homer in a 5-3 win over the Nationals on Friday.

Keon Broxton tied things up with his first MLB homer in the fifth before Nieuwenhuis took Max Scherzer deep in the sixth to put the Brewers in front. It was a bit of a flashback for the Nationals, as he hit a crushing go-ahead homer against them last September while with the Mets. Nieuwenhuis struck out in his other three at-bats on Friday, which has been the norm for him this year. The 28-year-old has provided some patience and speed, but he's hitting just .224 through 64 games.
Jun 24 - 11:51 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Thursday against the Cubs.

It was odd then and it looks especially bad now that Craig Counsell opened the season with Ramon Flores in center field and Nieuwenhuis glued to the bench. Since getting a chance to establish himself, Nieuwenhuis has hit .278 with an .850 OPS in 79 at-bats. He's not really that good, but he was the Brewers' best option in center field all along.
May 19 - 5:00 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis filled up the stat sheet in Saturday's extra-innings loss to the Padres, finishing 3-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.

Nieuwenhuis had a two-run double in the first inning and added an RBI double in the seventh as well. The runs batted in were his first since May 1, as was his steal, the third of the year for Nieuwenhuis. The outfielder is hitting a healthy .288/.397/.439 in a part-time role.
May 15 - 12:23 AM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis delivered a go-ahead two-run double in a 5-4 win over the Cubs on Friday.

The double was the exclamation point on a five-run rally. Nieuwenhuis also walked and stole a base in the game. The 28-year-old came into camp with a good shot at winning the Brewers’ starting center field job, but Keon Broxton appears to be ahead of him on the depth chart. Nieuwenhuis is batting .250 (10-for-40) with a homer, two doubles, and a triple this spring. He has struck out 18 times.
