Kirk Nieuwenhuis has elected free agency.

Nieuwenhuis hit only .115/.258/.269 over 16 games with the Brewers this season, as he spent nearly all of the year in the minors. He'll have to look for a minor league contract this offseason.
Oct 6 - 3:43 PM

Brewers sent OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Nieuwenhuis got pushed off the Brewers' 40-man roster on trade-deadline day to open up a spot for Jeremy Jeffress, who was acquired from the Rangers. The 29-year-old outfielder is a .221/.311/.384 career hitter in the major leagues.
Aug 3 - 2:44 PM

Brewers designated OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired Jeremy Jeffress on the 40-man roster. Nieuwenhuis was just called up a couple of days ago and is 3-for-26 (.115) at the major league level this season.
Jul 31 - 4:26 PM

Brewers purchased the contract of OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The 29-year-old outfielder has appeared in 15 games for the Brewers this season, slashing .080/.233/.240 with one homer, one RBI and a 15/4 K/BB ratio across 30 plate appearances. He'll provide the Brewers with another option in the outfield.
Jul 29 - 3:47 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis accepted an assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Nieuwenhuis surprisingly passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment on Friday. The Brewers have a crowded outfield situation in Triple-A, but Nieuwenhuis is useful depth to have around.
Apr 24 - 1:53 PM

Brewers sent OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The 29-year-old was waived earlier this week after slashing a putrid .080/.233/.240 in his first 30 plate appearances. It's a bit surprising that no other teams were willing to take a shot on him, as at least the Pirates had been rumored to have some level of interest. He'll continue to function as minor league outfield depth for the Brewers.
Apr 23 - 7:39 PM

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates have mulled Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment by the Brewers Friday and the Pirates are looking for outfield help following Starling Marte's PED suspension. However, Biertempfel notes that while Nieuwenhuis offers nice defense, the Pirates seem unlikely to go after him because of his weak bat.
Apr 23 - 2:13 PM

Brewers designated OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment.

Nieuwenhuis had just two hits in his first 25 at-bats and it cost him his roster spot. He's making about twice the major league minimum, which could be a factor as the Brewers try to pass him through waivers.
Apr 21 - 3:51 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's Cactus League game against the White Sox.

Nieuwenhuis cranked a solo shot off Zack Burdi with two outs in the fourth inning, his fourth homer of the spring. The 29-year-old outfielder is expected to work mostly as a backup outfielder to begin the 2017 season. He saw 125 games with the Brewers a year ago.
Apr 1 - 5:37 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered, doubled twice, and plated six runs in Monday’s 24-3 drubbing of the Mariners.

Yes, that score was not a misprint. The Brewers actually had 23 runs through the first five innings. Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored on the afternoon. With an RBI double and a three-run homer, he drove in four runs in the fourth inning alone as the Brewers batted around and then some. Nieuwenhuis saw significant time in the Brewers’ outfield last season while putting up a .709 OPS over 125 games, but he’s expected to begin 2017 in a reserve role.
Mar 13 - 9:02 PM

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (abdomen) said Sunday that he'll enter spring training without any restrictions.

Nieuwenhuis underwent nerve release surgery after last season but is 100 percent recovered from the procedure. He's expected to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder.
Jan 29 - 3:26 PM

Brewers general manager David Stearns said that Kirk Nieuwenhuis underwent nerve release surgery after the close of the 2016 season.

Nerve release surgeries and sports hernia surgeries are similar, but the good news for Nieuwenhuis is that the former has a speedier recovery attached to it. He initially injured his abdomen in mid-September. It would appear that the 29-year-old outfielder is on track for spring training barring a setback.

Brewers and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

It's a split contract, as he'll make that much if he's in the majors but his salary will fall to $275,000 if he's in the minors. Nieuwenhuis hit just .209/.324/.385 for the Brewers last season but did pop 13 homers.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (abdomen) grounded out as a pinch-hitter on Sunday against the Rockies.

It was the first plate appearance for Nieuwenhuis since he strained his abdomen in mid-September. He had a decent year as a utility outfielder with the Brewers and should be brought back in a similar role for 2017. The 29-year-old is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter.
