Wilton Lopez tossed 1 1/3 perfect relief innings in Saturday's 10-2 drubbing of the Giants.
Lopez held a 12.46 ERA on April 12 and has been working since to minimize the toll his early-season woes wrought on his earned run average. He finished his first month in Colorado with a 6.17 ERA, but has been the reliever the Rockies believed they were acquiring over the winter since, posting a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. Interestingly, Lopez had a superb 8/0 K/BB rate during his awful April and has notched a sub-mediocre 3/3 K/BB rate in May. May 19 - 3:05 AM

Wilton Lopez holds a 10.80 ERA and has allowed 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings so far this season.

Much of the damage came on Opening Day, when Lopez allowed three runs on four hits over an inning of work. Still, he's given up a run an six hits since then while striking out just one batter. The reliever's velocity has been down a tick so far, but so far there's been no talk that last year's elbow issue is a problem again. Lopez could get passed by Rex Brothers as the Rockies' backup plan at closer if his struggles continue.

Rockies avoided arbitration with RHP Wilton Lopez by signing him to a one-year, $1.7625 million contract.

Lopez was arbitration-eligible for the first time. The right-hander has posted a 2.64 ERA over the last three seasons and will help set up for the Rockies in 2013 after coming over from Houston in a trade last month.

Rockies acquired RHP Wilton Lopez and a player to be named later or cash from the Astros in exchange for RHPs Alex White and Alex Gillingham.

The deal has officially been announced, so obviously the Rockies are convinced that Lopez's elbow isn't an issue. As long as he stays healthy, the right-hander should be a nice setup man for the Rockies, as he's put up a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the last three seasons for the Astros. White failed miserably in Colorado but is an intriguing pickup by Houston.

MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports that the Rockies have acquired Wilton Lopez from the Astros.

No word yet on who the Astros will receive in return, but the Denver Post's Troy Renck reported earlier that it was expected to be two pitching prospects. A potential deal last week sending Lopez to the Phillies was nixed reportedly due to a physical concern with the righty, so don't etch this one down in stone until he passes a physical.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are "closing in" on a trade for Wilton Lopez.

The Phillies reached an agreement to acquire Lopez last week, but the deal reportedly fell through due to physical issues with the right-hander. Evidently that hasn't deterred the Rockies from pursuing him. Lopez deal with elbow issues with the Astros in 2012 but posted a 1.85 ERA over his final 32 games after returning from the DL. Renck expects the Astros to receive two young pitchers in the deal.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post hears that the Rockies have had discussions with the Astros about Wilton Lopez.

Lopez had been set to go to the Phillies, but the deal reportedly was nixed due to physical concerns. The right-hander dealt with elbow issues during 2012 but returned from the DL in the second half to pitch well.

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, the Phillies have halted their pursuit of Astros' right-hander Wilton Lopez.

Talks progressed to the point where Lopez was in Philadelphia to take a physical on Wednesday. However, it all came crumbling down shortly thereafter. While this isn't confirmed, there has been some speculation that Lopez's elbow might have been a factor. The Phillies will now have to search for a set-up man elsewhere.

The trade that was supposed to send reliever Wilton Lopez to the Phillies "appears to have hit a snag."

That's the word from MLB.com Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart. Lopez was in Philadelphia on Wednesday for a physical, which might not have gone smoothly. The righty did experience elbow problems in 2012. Houston was supposed to get a pair of youngsters in return.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Phillies won't officially acquire right-hander Wilton Lopez from the Astros until he passes a physical.

That's not exactly a formality in Lopez's case, as he experienced an elbow issue this past season. However, assuming he passes, the Phillies are expected to send a couple near major-league ready prospects to the Astros.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Phillies have reached an agreement with the Astros to acquire reliever Wilton Lopez.

There are still some details to be worked out, but it's pretty close to a done deal. It's not clear who the Astros will get in return, but Heyman hears that they will receive some near major league-ready prospects. Lopez is an excellent pickup for the Phillies, who figure to use him as a bridge to closer Jonathan Papelbon. The 29-year-old right-hander had a 2.17 ERA and 54/8 K/BB ratio over 66 1/3 innings this season and has a career ground ball rate of 55.9 percent. It makes sense for the Astros to sell on him now, though, as they don't figure to contend in the near future.

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, the Phillies are in "serious talks" with the Astros about right-hander Wilton Lopez.

One of the more underrated relievers in the game, Lopez has a 2.64 ERA over the past three seasons. If acquired, he would help set up for closer Jonathan Papelbon. The 29-year-old right-hander is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Tuesday that he's "extremely comfortable" with Wilton Lopez possibly being the team's closer next season.

"If we have an opportunity to improve our bullpen we're going to take it, but I feel extremely comfortable with Lopez finishing games," Luhnow said. "He's a strike-thrower. I love that." Lopez converted seven of nine save chances after taking over as closer and boasts a nice 2.20 ERA and 1.04 WHIP this season. He's probably better suited to be a setup man, but, at least among the Astros' current options, he's the best fit in the ninth.

Wilton Lopez picked up a blown save and suffered defeat against the Giants on Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits over 2/3 of an inning.

The Astros took a 2-1 lead into the ninth, but elected to have Wesley Wright start the inning against the left-handed Brandon Belt. After Belt singled, Lopez was called upon to get out of the inning, but he surrendered an RBI double to Joaquin Arias that tied the game and an RBI single to Hector Sanchez to put the Giants on top. With as few save chances as the Astros have been generating, it's not an encouraging sign that Lopez has blown two of his last three opportunities.

Wilton Lopez slammed the door on the Mets on Friday, retiring all four hitters he faced to preserve the Astros victory.

With save chances being few and far between with the Astros, it was just the second save that Lopez has recorded since assuming the position. He continues to pitch very well however, and should have a leg up on the competition for the role next Spring.
