Orioles placed INF Ryan Flaherty on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 23, with a strained right groin.
Flaherty thinks he'll be ready to play in a week or so, but Baltimore couldn't afford to wait. With J.J. Hardy (shoulder) and Jonathan Schoop (knee) also out, the O's will roll with Everth Cabrera at shortstop and Jimmy Paredes and Rey Navarro at second base for a while. Apr 24 - 2:46 PM

Date:

Ryan Flaherty suffered a groin injury while running from first to second on Wednesday.

He apparently suffered it on the very last play of the game. Flaherty indicated that he didn't believe this was a DL-worthy injury. If he is able to avoid the DL, he'll still likely miss at least a few games this weekend.
Apr 23 - 5:56 PM

Ryan Flaherty is starting at shortstop in the Orioles' season-opener Monday against the Rays.

J.J. Hardy is on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Flaherty gets the nod over Everth Cabrera. The full Opening Day lineup for Baltimore: Alejandro De Aza LF, Manny Machado 3B, Adam Jones CF, Steve Pearce 1B, Travis Snider RF, Delmon Young DH, Ryan Flaherty SS, Jonathan Schoop 2B, Caleb Joseph C. Chris Tillman is the starting pitcher.

Ryan Flaherty went 3-for-3 with a double Tuesday against the Pirates.

With Delmon Young and a backup catcher (Caleb Joseph if Matt Wieters is healthy, Steve Clevenger otherwise) guaranteed roster spots, the Orioles are facing tough calls for two spots on the bench. The incumbents are Flaherty and David Lough, but the Orioles also have Everth Cabrera to consider for the infield, an out-of-options Jimmy Paredes and Nolan Reimold making a strong case for an outfield spot. Since Cabrera is playing some outfield, it's possible the Orioles could keep both him and Flaherty. They'd also have the option of sending down Jonathan Schoop and letting Cabrera and Flaherty battle it out for second, though that seems unlikely.
Mar 24 - 4:31 PM

Ryan Flaherty (head) is back in the Orioles' Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday.

Flaherty was pulled from a game Tuesday after taking a pitch off his helmet. He passed multiple concussion tests.
Mar 19 - 9:47 AM

Ryan Flaherty (head) said Wednesday that he's fine.

Flaherty left Tuesday's Grapefruit League game after he was hit in the helmet by a pitch, but he apparently passed concussion tests. He won't play Wednesday, but look for him to return to action in the next day or so.
Mar 18 - 8:19 AM

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday that Ryan Flaherty (head) is fine.

Flaherty was pulled from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game after taking a pitch off his helmet, but he has apparently passed concussion tests. The infielder won't play Wednesday in the Orioles' road game, but he should be back in action later this week.
Mar 17 - 4:26 PM

Ryan Flaherty exited Tuesday's Grapefruit League game after he was hit in the helmet by a pitch.

Flaherty stayed on his feet and actually walked down to first base before being removed from the game. The Orioles understandably didn't want to take any chances and will likely send him for tests to be on the safe side.
Mar 17 - 2:42 PM

Orioles and INF Ryan Flaherty avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.075 million contract.

It's a nice raise over the $513,000 that he made in 2014. Flaherty can also earn an additional $25,000 for reaching 400 plate appearances. He'll be in an open competition in spring training to be the O's starting second baseman, though his fantasy value remains limited.
Jan 25 - 9:54 PM

Ryan Flaherty requested $1.5 million and was offered $900,000 by the Orioles when arbitration figures were exchanged.

The two sides seem likely to work something out. Flaherty was projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to make $1.0 million in his first year of arbitration.

Ryan Flaherty hit a solo home run, the only run the Orioles could muster on the afternoon, in Wednesday's ALCS Game 4 loss to the Royals.

Flaherty's home run off Royals starter Jason Vargas in the third inning cut the Royals' lead to 2-1, but it was as close as the Orioles would come. Surprisingly, Flaherty finished the series as one of the Orioles' most productive hitters, batting .333 (4-for-12) with a home run and three RBI.

Ryan Flaherty went 3-for-5 and drove home a pair of runs as the Orioles dropped Game 1 of the ALCS to the Royals in extra innings on Friday.

Flaherty delivered one of the biggest hits of the night for the Orioles, plating two runs with a two-out double in the fifth inning to pull the O's to within a run at 5-4. With the three-hit attack, he's now hitting .357 (5-for-14) with three RBI in the postseason.

Ryan Flaherty hit his seventh homer Monday in the win over the Blue Jays.

It was a two-run shot off Marcus Stroman. Flaherty started at second base tonight and later moved to third after Jonathan Schoop was brought in for defense. Schoop remains a starter, so Flaherty is really competing with Kelly Johnson for time at third. He's helped his case lately by hitting .343 in 35 at-bats this month.

Ryan Flaherty went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout as the Orioles fell to the Rays.

Flaherty drew the start at shortstop in the place of J.J. Hardy who is dealing with a hamstring injury. He has had a rough season at the plate, slashing .201/.265/.326 with six homers and 24 RBI.

Ryan Flaherty went 2-for-3 with a homer against the Red Sox on Monday.

Flaherty has been a bit player since Manny Machado came off the DL; tonight's start was his second in June and third in two weeks. Of course, he didn't do much of anything to earn a bigger role while Machado was out, so he can't really complain. Even after tonight, he's hitting .221 with just two homers in 104 at-bats.
