Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres have requested release waivers on James Darnell.

Padres designated INF James Darnell for assignment.

Darnell is a career .297/.394/.502 hitter in the minors, but multiple shoulder surgeries have threatened to wreck his career. He's still just 26, though, so perhaps someone will take a shot on him on waivers.

James Darnell could need another surgery on his left shoulder after injuring it at Triple-A Tucson on May 14.

Darnell was hurt following a swing and was in San Diego last week to consult with team doctors. The 26-year-old has already had two operations on the shoulder -- one in 2011 and again in 2012 -- so this is obviously not a good development. Even if a decision is made against surgery, he'll be sidelined for a while.

Padres activated 3B/OF James Darnell from the 15-day disabled list, optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

Darnell is over his strained left oblique muscle and had been on a rehab assignment over the last week. He should be up with the Padres at some point later this season.

Padres placed INF/OF James Darnell on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with a strained left oblique.

He'll likely miss most of April with the ailment. Once healthy, Darnell will probably be optioned to Triple-A.

James Darnell (oblique) could miss another two weeks with a strained left oblique.

Darnell has been dealing with the ailment all month and has been limited to 12 Cactus League plate appearances. He would have been an option to fill in at third base while Chase Headley (thumb) was out, but it appears he'll join Headley on the DL to start the season.

James Darnell is day-to-day with right oblique soreness.

There's no timetable for when Darnell will be cleared to return. While the injury isn't believed to be serious, he'll need to prove he's healthy if he has any chance to win a bench spot in spring training. Darnell was limited to seven games at the major league level in 2012.

Padres activated OF James Darnell from the 60-day disabled list.

Darnell aggravated a left shoulder injury in May and eventually required arthroscopic surgery in August. Barring any setbacks, the 25-year-old outfielder should be ready for spring training.

James Darnell (shoulder) hit soft-toss Saturday.

It's the first time he's done so since landing on the disabled list back in mid-May with a subluxation of his left shoulder. Darnell could make it back sometime next month.

Padres transferred OF James Darnell from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Darnell has been sidelined since the middle of this month with a subluxation of his left shoulder and won't be eligible to return from the 60-day DL until mid-July.

An MRI on James Darnell's left shoulder showed that his surgically-repaired labrum was intact.

Good news. Darnell will have another MRI in a few weeks to be sure, but it sounds like he's avoided another major injury. He doesn't have a timetable to return, however.

Padres placed INF/OF James Darnell on the 15-day disabled list with a subluxation of his left shoulder.

Darnell suffered the injury while attempting to make a diving catch during Thursday's game. For what it's worth, it's the very same shoulder which required surgery last September. The timeline for his return isn't yet known.
