James Darnell could need another surgery on his left shoulder after injuring it at Triple-A Tucson on May 14.
Darnell was hurt following a swing and was in San Diego last week to consult with team doctors. The 26-year-old has already had two operations on the shoulder -- one in 2011 and again in 2012 -- so this is obviously not a good development. Even if a decision is made against surgery, he'll be sidelined for a while. May 20 - 10:30 PM

James Darnell (oblique) could miss another two weeks with a strained left oblique.

Darnell has been dealing with the ailment all month and has been limited to 12 Cactus League plate appearances. He would have been an option to fill in at third base while Chase Headley (thumb) was out, but it appears he'll join Headley on the DL to start the season.

James Darnell is day-to-day with right oblique soreness.

There's no timetable for when Darnell will be cleared to return. While the injury isn't believed to be serious, he'll need to prove he's healthy if he has any chance to win a bench spot in spring training. Darnell was limited to seven games at the major league level in 2012.

An MRI on James Darnell's left shoulder showed that his surgically-repaired labrum was intact.
