Pirates signed RHP Brian Bass to a minor league contract.

Bass was non-tendered by the Orioles in early December after posing a 4.90 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP in 48 relief appearances during the season. The 28-year-old has issues with command -- he posted a 54/44 K/BB ratio in '09 -- but there's a chance the Bucs will find some use for him this year. Pittsburgh also signed catcher Luke Carlin and outfielder Brian Myrow to minor league contracts.

Orioles non-tendered RHP Brian Bass.

Bass, who turns 28 in January, posted a 4.90 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 48 relief appearances with Baltimore last season. Unless he improves his command -- Bass posted a 54/44 K/BB ratio over 86 innings in '09 -- he'll keep finding himself unemployed.

Brian Bass pitched three innings and allowed two runs -- one earned -- in three innings Sunday in the Orioles' 6-2 defeat of the Red Sox.

Bass has given up five runs -- three earned -- in 9 2/3 innings this spring. There wouldn't seem to be any upside here at all, but he remains in the running for a spot in Baltimore's rotation.

Brian Bass picked up a win in a rain-shortened game after allowing one run in six innings against the Blue Jays on Saturday.

For the second day in a row, the game was called in the seventh inning. Bass pitched into the sixth inning for the first time in four starts with the Orioles. He allowed 11 earned runs in 21 innings for his new team, and he finished with a 4.84 ERA in 89 1/3 innings for the Twins and Orioles combined. The Orioles now have to decide whether it will be worth keeping him on the 40-man roster this winter.

The Orioles have chosen Brian Bass to start over Brian Burres against the Jays on Saturday.

Baltimore already knows what Burres can do, but the team has to decide whether Bass will be worth keeping around this winter. As a result, it makes sense to give the inferior pitcher the start.
