Mariners signed C Steven Lerud to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The deal has been in the works for the past few days and it's now official. Lerud, 31, spent last season with the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate while batting .238/.320/.301 with two homers and 23 RBI in 60 games.

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Mariners are closing in on a minor league deal with free agent catcher Steven Lerud.

The deal would also include an invitation to major league spring training. The 31-year-old backstop spent the 2015 season in the Nationals organization where he slashed .238/.320/.301 with two homers and 23 RBI in 60 games at Triple-A Syracuse.

Lerud spent the entire 2014 season with the Braves' Triple-A affiliate, batting .250/.376/.390 with four home runs in 200 plate appearances. The 30-year-old will act as organizational catching depth for the Nats.

The move clears a spot for Carlos Ruiz (hamstring) to return from the disabled list. Lerud went 0-for-5 in six games during his brief stint with the big club.

He also gets an invite to spring training. Lerud, 27, batted just .193/.268/.303 with five home runs, 30 RBI and a .571 OPS over 262 plate appearances this past season with Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles' organization. He'll provide some catching depth in the minors.
