He was cleared to make room for Ben Francisco on the 40-man roster. Suarez, who turns 23 in October, has a 4.08 ERA and 62/30 K/BB ratio over 125 2/3 innings this season with High-A Charlotte. He was ranked as the organization's No. 17 prospect coming into the season.

Rays optioned RHP Albert Suarez to High-A Charlotte.

Suarez underwent knee surgery last month and allowed four runs over four innings during Grapefruit League action. The 21-year-old has been limited to just 133 1/3 over four seasons due to various health problems, but he still has the potential to develop into a mid-rotation starter in the long-term. Hak-Ju Lee, Bryan Augenstein and Matt Torra were also reassigned to minor league camp.

Rays pitching prospect Albert Suarez will undergo an exploratory left knee scope next Friday.

It's expected to sideline him 1-2 weeks. Suarez had no shot of making the Opening Day roster, but it's worth noting because the 21-year-old has had injury problems during his brief professional career. He'll slated to begin the year in High- or Double-A once recovered.

Rays pitching prospect Albert Suarez has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his injured right elbow.

Suarez traveled to Tampa on Tuesday to be examined by club doctors, who later suggested the procedure. The 20-year-old was 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA in two starts for Single-A Hudson Valley this season. He'll aim to return to action by July of 2010.
