Pedro Ciriaco was scratched from Friday's Grapefruit League lineup due to back spasms.

Deven Marrero will start in his place at shortstop. Consider Ciriaco day-to-day for now.
Mar 15 - 6:27 PM

Pedro Ciriaco had a nice night in Friday's loss to the Orioles, going 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI.

His RBI double off Miguel Gonzalez in the third inning gave the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead, but it wouldn't last. He's done a very nice job in his first extended major league action, hitting .297/.316/.401 with two homers, 19 RBI and 15 stolen bases. He's likely done more than enough to play his way onto the Sox' 2013 roster.

Pedro Ciriaco had a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning to lead the Red Sox to a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Ciriaco finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. The 26-year-old is hitting just .171 (11-for-64) over his last 18 games, so regression has hit him pretty hard, but he could still provide some speed to fantasy owners in a pinch. The Red Sox have won back-to-back games for the first time since August 26-27.

Pedro Ciriaco went 0-for-4 in Monday's loss and is 4-for-31 in his last eight games.

That's 4-for-31 with no extra-base hits, no RBI and no walks. Ciriaco has just three walks in 167 at-bats since his callup, so if he's not hitting for average, he's a big liability in the lineup. He's been a nice surprise for the Red Sox this year, but it appears as though he's getting exposed now that his role has been expanded.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Thursday that Pedro Ciriaco will play a lot at second base until Dustin Pedroia (thumb) returns from the disabled list.

Ciriaco was called up from the minors last Friday and went 7-for-13 (.538) with two doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases against the Yankees. Nick Punto may also get the occasional start, but he's likely to remain in his familiar utility role. Ciriaco is worth a look in AL-only leagues.

Pedro Ciriaco went 3-for-4 with a walk, a steal and two runs scored against the Yankees on Sunday night.

Ciriaco won't keep hitting like this, but odds are that he'll be good for a few more steals before Dustin Pedroia comes off the DL. Those in need of a middle infielder should give him a look.

Pedro Ciriaco is batting second in Boston's Sunday Night lineup against the Yankees.

Ciriaco is coming off a night to remember. In his Red Sox debut Saturday, he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, leading Boston to a 9-5 victory over the Yankees. Ciriaco was hitting .301 with 14 steals at Triple-A Pawtucket and could be worth a look as a middle infielder in deeper mixed leagues if he receives everyday at-bats while Dustin Pedroia is out.

Pedro Ciriaco had a night to remember in his Red Sox debut Saturday, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI leading the Red Sox to a 9-5 victory over the Yankees.

Ciriaco also scored twice and stole a base in the impressive performance. He had the Fenway faithful chanting "Pedro, Pedro, Pedro" after his bases clearing double in the sixth inning. He was hitting .301 with 14 steals at Triple-A Pawtucket and could be worth a look as a middle infielder in deeper mixed leagues if he receives everyday at-bats while Dustin Pedroia is out.

Red Sox purchased the contract of INF Pedro Ciriaco from Triple-A Pawtucket.

He'll provide some middle infield depth with Dustin Pedroia (thumb) out. Ciriaco has batted .301/.318/.406 with four homers and 14 steals at Pawtucket this season.

Pedro Ciriaco has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Pawtucket with an oblique strain.

Ciriaco is likely to need over two weeks of recovery time. The 26-year-old infielder had a spectacular spring, but this can be considered a setback toward his goal of climbing back to the major leagues quickly.

Pedro Ciriaco stole two bases after entering as a pinch-runner and doubled in a run in his lone at-bat Sunday against the Twins.

With a .415 average, a walkoff homer against the Marlins and seven steals in 41 at-bats, Ciriaco has made quite an impression on the Red Sox and now seems well positioned to claim a bench spot. He's a long shot to have any fantasy value, but since he is a better defender than Mike Aviles, he shouldn't be written off completely.

Pedro Ciriaco hit a walkoff homer off Alejandro Ramos in the 10th inning to give the Red Sox a 5-3 win over the Marlins on Monday.

If only the Red Sox had a player like Ciriaco last September. Well, no, it probably wouldn't have made a difference. The 26-year-old Pirates castoff, who was signed to a minor league deal in January, is expected to be a part of Triple-A Pawtucket's infield this season.

Red Sox signed INF Pedro Ciriaco to a minor league contract.

Ciriaco was non-tendered by the Pirates in mid-December after appearing in only 23 major league games last season. The 26-year-old will serve as organizational infield depth for the Red Sox in 2012.

Pirates non-tendered INF Pedro Ciriaco.

Ciriaco was designated for assignment last week, but this move officially makes him a free agent. The 26-year-old infielder batted .303 (10-for-33) in 23 games at the major-league level this season. He'll likely get a spring training invite somewhere.
