Rays designated LHP John Gaub for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired Drew Sutton on the active roster. Gaub, who was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in early April, has a 4.32 ERA and 21/12 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings with Triple-A Durham this season.

John Gaub (back) is expected to throw and bunt on Thursday.

Gaub has been limited in the early days of camp due to back spasms. The 26-year-old left-hander made four appearances with the Cubs last season as a September call-up after posting a 3.42 ERA and 75/40 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings. He'll be in the mix for a bullpen spot during spring training.

Cubs recalled LHP John Gaub from Triple-A Iowa.

Gaub, who was acquired in the Mark DeRosa deal in December 2008, posted a 3.42 ERA, seven saves and a 75/40 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season. The 26-year-old southpaw has averaged 5.8 BB/9 in the minors, so he is unlikely to be an impact arm at the major league level.

Cubs purchased the contracts of LHP John Gaub, RHPs Blake Parker and Rafael Dolis, OF James Adduci and C Welington Castillo.

The five are now protected from December's Rule 5 draft. Armed with a fastball clocked as high as 100 mph, the 21-year-old Dolis surely would have been chosen had he been exposed. That said, he's still a bit of a project, posting a 3.79 ERA and 75/53 K/BB ratio in 99 2/3 innings with Class A Daytona in 2009.
