Mariners designated LHP Mauricio Robles for assignment.

The move was made in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for recently-signed outfielder Jason Bay. Robles struggled mightily with his control in 2012, issuing 63 walks over 71 2/3 minor league innings. Should he clear waivers, he'll continue to serve as bullpen depth at Triple-A Tacoma.

Mariners recalled LHP Mauricio Robles from Triple-A Tacoma.

Robles pitched mostly in relief at Double- and Triple-A this year and really struggled with his control, walking 63 over 71 2/3 frames. He has a big arm but clearly needs more seasoning.

Mariners optioned LHP Mauricio Robles to Triple-A Tacoma.

Robles posted an 8.91 ERA in 10 starts last year after coming back from elbow surgery. He has a nice arm but clearly needs some more seasoning. He could make his major league debut at some point this season, though.

Robles underwent surgery in mid-March on his throwing elbow and won't resume throwing for at least three more weeks. He will likely report to Triple-A once healthy.

Mauricio Robles will have surgery soon to remove "loose bodies" from his elbow.

He's expected to resume throwing in a month, so it's not a major setback for the prospect. Robles, who is ranked by Baseball America as the Mariners' No. 6 prospect, will report to Triple-A once he's healthy.

Mariners acquired LHP Mauricio Robles and LHP Lucas French from the Mariners for LHP Jarrod Washburn.

Robles, signed out of Venezuela three years ago as a 17-year-old, is 8-6 in the minors this season with a 4.24 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings. He throws a tight, 90-94 mph fastball, but needs to work on his off-speed stuff. The 20-year-old projects as a setup man or closer.

Mauricio Robles allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings Thursday for low Single-A West Michigan.

Robles, who was signed out of Venezuela three years ago, is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA and a 26/6 K/BB ratio in 16 innings. He was just as effective at West Michigan last season, finishing with a 2.66 ERA in 91 1/3 innings, but because he walked 54 batters, the Tigers have opted to keep him in the Midwest League for now. It shouldn't be long before he moves up to Single-A Lakeland.
