Carlos Corporan has elected free agency.
Corporan was outrighted off the Rangers' 40-man roster last week after batting just .178/.244/.299 in 121 plate appearances during the 2015 regular season. Veteran catchers tend to have nine lives and Corporan should be able to latch on with a new organization this winter, but it'll probably be on a non-guaranteed minor league contract. Rangers sent C Carlos Corporan outright to Triple-A Round Rock.

Corporan can elect for free agency if he so chooses. The 31-year-old catcher was waylaid by a left thumb injury for much of the season and underwent surgery on October 16. He's eligible for arbitration in the off-season. When healthy, he hit .278/.244/.299 with three homers and 15 RBI for the Rangers over the course of 107 at-bats.

Carlos Corporan (thumb) will resume a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Wednesday.

Carlos Corporan will need surgery over the offseason on his sprained left thumb.

Aug 16 - 2:47 PM

Carlos Corporan (thumb) has been pulled off his rehab assignment.

Corporan is still feeling soreness in his sprained left thumb and there's no timetable for when he'll resume the assignment. With Robinson Chirinos (shoulder) having gone on the disabled list over the weekend, that means the Rangers will be going with Chris Gimenez and Bobby Wilson at catcher for a while.
Aug 4 - 8:39 PM

Carlos Corporan (thumb) will catch a bullpen session on Friday.

Corporan's sprained left thumb remains swollen, but the feeling is that he'll be ready to do some catching by next weekend. He should have a shot to be activated before the end of the month.
Jul 19 - 2:06 PM

Rangers placed C Carlos Corporan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 13, with a sprained left thumb.

It's unclear how long he's been dealing with the ailment or how long he'll be sidelined. Tomas Telis has replaced Corporan as the club's backup catcher.
Jul 17 - 4:26 PM

Carlos Corporan finished 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in Tuesday's win over the White Sox.

Corporan didn't even start the game, but he entered after Robinson Chirinos left the game with a bruised hand. In Chirinos' stead, Corporan had a two-run single before blasting a three-run homer in the eighth. The homer was Corporan's second of the year to go with 10 RBI.
Jun 2 - 10:49 PM

Carlos Corporan is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Tuesday's game versus the Athletics.

Robinson Chirinos has never been a full-time catcher before and has had dealt with concussion issues in the past, so Corporan is in line to play more than most backup catchers this season. He has a bit of pop but isn't someone fantasy owners can rely on.
Apr 7 - 6:13 PM

Rangers acquired C Carlos Corporan from the Astros for RHP Akeem Bostick.

Corporan will serve as the back-up to Robinson Chirinos behind the plate. The Astros had a glut of catching depth and decided to designate Corporan for assignment on Tuesday, but quickly found a taker in the Rangers. The 31-year-old won't hit much, as he has a career .226/.286/.350 triple-slash line as a switch-hitter, but his value will come in spelling Chirinos, handling the Rangers' pitching staff, and playing solid defense.

Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Rangers and Astros have agreed on a trade involving Carlos Corporan.

The Astros designated Corporan for assignment on Tuesday after recently avoiding arbitration with him for $975,000. The Rangers, in search of catching depth, pounced on the opportunity to add a back-up to Robinson Chirinos behind the dish. Corporan, 31, has a career .637 OPS in 659 plate appearances.

Chris Cotillo of reports that the Rangers are emerging as the "clear favorite" to acquire Carlos Corporan.

It's no surprise, as the Rangers were connected to Corporan last week. Corporan was designated for assignment by the Astros Tuesday, and they likely knew they had a deal with Texas that they expected to finalize. The 31-year-old has batted .230/.294/.368 with 13 homers over the last two seasons for Houston. He'd be used as Robinson Chirinos' backup with the Rangers.

Corporan hit .235/.302/.376 last season as the Astros' backup catcher. Jason Castro and Hank Conger will be the club's catchers in 2015.
