Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that the Cubs are interested in bringing back Chris Carpenter.

Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier Tuesday, and the Cubs could claim him on waivers if Boston doesn't trade him first. The hard-throwing right-hander has put up a 5.17 ERA over 18 appearances the last two seasons with the Cubs and Red Sox.

Red Sox designated RHP Chris Carpenter for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Mike Napoli on the 40-man roster. Carpenter, who was acquired from the Cubs last offseason as compensation for Theo Epstein, missed a large part of last season following elbow surgery and posted a 9.00 ERA in eight appearances with the big club. The hard-throwing right-hander figures to draw interest on waivers.

Red Sox activated RHP Chris Carpenter from the 60-day disabled list, optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Carpenter is fully recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, but there's no room for him in Boston's bullpen. It's possible he could be up later this season.

Chris Carpenter (elbow) is ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Portland.

Chris Carpenter is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday to remove a bone spur from his elbow.

Chris Carpenter gave up four runs in one-plus innings of relief Thursday against the Cardinals.

Carpenter pitched a scoreless seventh, but he walked three and allowed a hit to start the eighth and all of the runners came around to score. He wasn't much of a candidate to make the Red Sox this spring anyway, but he hasn't helped himself so far.

Red Sox acquired RHP Chris Carpenter from the Cubs as compensation for general manager Theo Epstein.

The situation is finally resolved after close to four months of fruitless haggling. Carpenter, 26, was a third-round pick in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He can touch 100 mph with his fastball, but the right-hander posted an ugly 5.91 ERA in 42 2/3 minor-league innings last season and projects as nothing more than a middle reliever. The Sox will also get a player to be named later and will send the Cubs a player to be named later at some future date.

Chris Carpenter has been placed on the minor league disabled list with a strained oblique.

Carpenter posted a 2.79 ERA in 10 games earlier this season for the Cubs but also walked seven over 7 2/3 innings. He's been similarly wild at Triple-A Iowa, walking 22 over 28 2/3 frames. The 25-year-old is likely to be back with the big club in September if he can get over the oblique ailment.

Cubs optioned RHP Chris Carpenter to Triple-A Iowa.

Carpenter holds a 2.97 ERA and has struck out eight over 9 2/3 relief innings for the Cubs this season, but he's also permitted 19 baserunners. The 25-year-old has a bright future in the bullpen but needs some more seasoning.
