Sergio Escalona (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Escalona was sidelined for most of camp with what was thought to be a hyperextended elbow, but was told Saturday he had a torn ligament and will have to undergo surgery. The 27-year-old appeared in 49 games last year and went 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA as the Astros' left-handed specialist.

Sergio Escalona will again have his left elbow examined by doctors.

Escalona has been nursing elbow soreness throughout camp, and it had seemed like he had turned a corner, but evidently he's still battling the ailment. We'll have to see what the doctor says, but you have to think at this point that his status for the start of the season is up in the air.

Sergio Escalona will not throw a scheduled bullpen session Friday after hyper-extending his left elbow while swinging a bat earlier in the week.

"We wanted to give it a day of rest," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "He’s still going to go through some things on the other fields. He’s not going to throw on the other fields. He’ll do some bunting, but no hitting. As of right now, we’re not concerned about it because he didn’t hurt it while throwing." It sounds like the 'Stros are just being cautious here. Escalona figures to resume throwing before long and should have a bullpen spot locked up after posting a 2.93 ERA in 27 2/3 innings last year.

Astros placed LHP Sergio Escalona on the 60-day disabled list with a sprained ankle.

Escalona tripped over a glove in the outfield during batting practice Friday. X-rays came back negative, but he has a fairly severe sprain and will not be returning to action this season. Over 27 2/3 innings, Escalona posted a solid 2.93 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. He also fanned 25 batters.

Sergio Escalona (ankle) is likely done for the season.

The good news is that X-rays on Escalona's ankle proved to be negative, but he was on crutches Friday and is not optimistic about returning this season. The lefty reliever suffered the injury when he tripped over a stray glove in the outfield during batting practice Friday.
