Stolmy Pimentel got the start against the Braves on Sunday and threw two scoreless innings.
With Jeff Locke, Radhames Liz and Arquimedes Caminero all also out of options and likely in line for bullpen spots, Pimentel might find himself on waivers later this week. He'd almost certainly be picked up by a team looking for an arm with upside, but the Pirates have enough depth that they can afford to move on. The rest of their options are all better bets to help the team this year. Mar 29 - 5:31 PM

Stolmy Pimentel gave up two runs in an inning of relief Thursday against the Orioles.

Pimentel, who ran out of options in 2013, would have been claimed on waivers last August, but he instead opted to go on the disabled list, allowing the Pirates to keep him. The reward figured to be a chance to compete for a rotation spot this spring. However, he's never factored into that mix behind Vance Worley and Jeff Locke. The Pirates have to decide whether to keep him as a reliever -- a tougher call with Locke also out of options and seemingly destined for the pen -- or to let his strong arm make his way elsewhere. He hasn't helped his cause by giving up five runs in five innings this spring.

Pirates activated RHP Stolmy Pimentel from the 15-day disabled list.

Pimentel missed a little over two weeks with a sprained right ankle. He'll be back in middle relief for the Pirates' three-game series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Stolmy Pimentel (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Thursday.

Pimentel should be ready to go when his 15 days are up on August 29, though the Pirates might elect to wait until rosters expand to activate him. He's been out with a sprained right ankle.

Stolmy Pimentel (ankle) threw a bullpen session Sunday.

Pimentel was placed on the disabled list on Friday with a sprained right ankle. He should be ready to go when his 15 days are up, though the Pirates might elect to wait until rosters expand to activate him.

Pirates placed RHP Stolmy Pimentel on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 14, with a sprained right ankle.

Pimentel says he hurt the ankle while throwing a pitch during Wednesday's appearance, but it could be a phantom injury just to create a spot on the roster for John Axford. He'll likely be held out until September 1.

Stolmy Pimentel will be placed on the disabled list on Friday with lower body soreness.

It was initially reported that he would be designated for assignment in order to free up a 40-man roster spot for John Axford, but the Pirates have designated Matt Hague instead. It's debatable as to whether Pimentel is actually injured, as Pittsburgh seems to have created an ailment in order to clear a 25-man roster spot. He should be activated on September 1.

Pirates designated RHP Stolmy Pimentel for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed John Axford on the active roster. Pimentel has compiled a 5.40 ERA and 37/16 K/BB ratio over 31 2/3 innings this season at the major league level. He figures to draw interest on waivers.

Pirates activated RHP Stolmy Pimentel from the 15-day disabled list.

Pimentel missed over a month of action with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. All six of the right-hander's appearances this season in the majors have been in relief, but he could conceivably be an option to stretch out and fill in for the injured Francisco Liriano (oblique).

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) hurled three scoreless innings during a minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona on Friday.

Pimentel allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out five. He's likely to make at least one more rehab appearance, but could be ready to rejoin the Pirates at some point next week.

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) threw another successful bullpen session on Monday.

Pimentel will be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment if he makes it through one final bullpen session later this week without experiencing any discomfort in his shoulder. The 24-year-old righty is currently on track to return to the Pirates' bullpen in early June. He owns a 2.61 ERA and 8.7 K/9 in 20 2/3 career major league frames.

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) threw a successful 28-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.

He's expected to repeat the process on Monday, and if all goes well he will head to extended spring training to begin his rehab assignment. The Pirates will continue to bring him along cautiously.

Pirates placed RHP Stolmy Pimentel on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Pimentel was showing promise this year in a mid-relief role, so the Pirates will hope that the shoulder discomfort doesn't linger. The 24-year-old righty owns a cool 2.61 ERA and 8.7 K/9 in 20 2/3 career major league frames.

Stolmy Pimentel held the Cubs scoreless for four innings to earn a win as the Pirates prevailed 4-3 in 16 innings Wednesday.

Make no mistake: the Pirates would have sent Pimentel to Triple-A and kept Vin Mazzaro at the end of the spring had Pimentel not been out of options. But that doesn't mean Pimentel can't be a useful part of the pitching staff, as he showed tonight. He has the stuff to be a legitimate starting pitcher in time, and he was able to work around three walks and hold off the Cubs until the Pirates finally scored again tonight. They won in the 16th when pinch-hitter Tony Sanchez, the last man on the bench, singled in Jose Tabata. Fortunately for both teams, there's a good chance Thursday's contest will be rained out. Neither is going to be excited to play after this marathon of a game.

Stolmy Pimentel yielded three runs in five innings Saturday in his start against the Phillies.

The runs came on homers from Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Cody Asche. Pimentel was making just his second official appearance of the spring, which is kind of odd given his status as a trade candidate. Or maybe the Pirates have their heart set on keeping him as a middle reliever. One thing is for sure: he's not clearing waivers if the team tries to sneak him through.
