Pirates activated RHP Stolmy Pimentel from the 15-day disabled list.
Pimentel missed over a month of action with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. All six of the right-hander's appearances this season in the majors have been in relief, but he could conceivably be an option to stretch out and fill in for the injured Francisco Liriano (oblique). Jun 11 - 3:17 PM

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) hurled three scoreless innings during a minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona on Friday.

Pimentel allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out five. He's likely to make at least one more rehab appearance, but could be ready to rejoin the Pirates at some point next week.

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) threw another successful bullpen session on Monday.

Pimentel will be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment if he makes it through one final bullpen session later this week without experiencing any discomfort in his shoulder. The 24-year-old righty is currently on track to return to the Pirates' bullpen in early June. He owns a 2.61 ERA and 8.7 K/9 in 20 2/3 career major league frames.

Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) threw a successful 28-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.

He's expected to repeat the process on Monday, and if all goes well he will head to extended spring training to begin his rehab assignment. The Pirates will continue to bring him along cautiously.
May 17 - 2:02 PM

Pirates placed RHP Stolmy Pimentel on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Pimentel was showing promise this year in a mid-relief role, so the Pirates will hope that the shoulder discomfort doesn't linger. The 24-year-old righty owns a cool 2.61 ERA and 8.7 K/9 in 20 2/3 career major league frames.
May 3 - 4:49 PM

Stolmy Pimentel held the Cubs scoreless for four innings to earn a win as the Pirates prevailed 4-3 in 16 innings Wednesday.

Make no mistake: the Pirates would have sent Pimentel to Triple-A and kept Vin Mazzaro at the end of the spring had Pimentel not been out of options. But that doesn't mean Pimentel can't be a useful part of the pitching staff, as he showed tonight. He has the stuff to be a legitimate starting pitcher in time, and he was able to work around three walks and hold off the Cubs until the Pirates finally scored again tonight. They won in the 16th when pinch-hitter Tony Sanchez, the last man on the bench, singled in Jose Tabata. Fortunately for both teams, there's a good chance Thursday's contest will be rained out. Neither is going to be excited to play after this marathon of a game.
Apr 3 - 1:36 AM

Stolmy Pimentel yielded three runs in five innings Saturday in his start against the Phillies.

The runs came on homers from Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Cody Asche. Pimentel was making just his second official appearance of the spring, which is kind of odd given his status as a trade candidate. Or maybe the Pirates have their heart set on keeping him as a middle reliever. One thing is for sure: he's not clearing waivers if the team tries to sneak him through.
Mar 22 - 5:48 PM

Stolmy Pimentel tossed two scoreless innings for the win as the Pirates topped the Phillies 4-1 on Sunday.

It's safe to say Pimentel will have a few scouts watching him this spring. He's out of options, and while the Pirates could squeeze him into their pen, they have so many strong options there that they might be better off cashing him in for a prospect.
Mar 2 - 4:48 PM

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated Sunday that Stolmy Pimentel could earn a spot in the Pirates Opening Day roster.

When discussing Pimentel, Hurdle stated "He's a very exciting young man to watch. We like his makeup and his skills. And what we were able to get from him last year." The talented 24-year-old right-hander is out of minor league options, so it seems an extreme likelihood that he cracks the roster, most likely in the bullpen.
Feb 16 - 7:16 PM

Pirates recalled RHP Stolmey Pimentel from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pimentel has posted a decent 3.35 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 123/56 K/BB ratio in 169 1/3 innings this season in the Pirates' minor league system. Pittsburgh is going with an all-hands-on-deck approach down the stretch.

Stolmy Pimentel reported to Pirates' camp Saturday.

Pimentel was the only Pirates' pitcher who didn't report on time, but he managed to solve his visa issues in his native Dominican Republic. The 23-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Red Sox in December as part of the Joel Hanrahan deal.

Stolmy Pimentel hasn't reported to Pirates' camp due to visa problems in his native Dominican Republic.

Pimentel was the only Pirates' pitcher or catcher who didn't report on time, which isn't the best way to make a first impression with his new club. The 23-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Red Sox in December as part of the Joel Hanrahan deal.

Pirates acquired RHP Stolmy Pimentel from the Red Sox in the Joel Hanrahan deal.

Pimentel, who turns 23 in February, owns a 4.37 ERA over six seasons in the minors. Once regarded as one of organization's top prospects, his star has faded over the past two seasons. He had a 4.59 ERA and 86/42 K/BB ratio over 115 2/3 innings with Double-A Portland in 2012. The Pirates will hope for a rebound.

Red Sox optioned RHP Stolmy Pimentel to Double-A Portland.

Pimentel was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason in order to be protected from the Rule 5 draft, but he's not close to major league-ready. He posted a 9.12 ERA in 15 starts last season in his first taste of Double-A, but the Sox still like his arm and he just turned 22 last month.

Red Sox prospect right-hander Stolmy Pimentel thinks his lat injury is minor.

Pimentel suffered the injury on Tuesday, but thinks he'll be able to resume throwing within the next few days. The 22-year-old posted a 6.79 ERA and 65/39 K/BB ratio over 102 innings between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland last season.
