Pina has been on the disabled list all season following surgery in February to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. The 25-year-old backstop will likely be optioned to Triple-A Omaha once he's back to full health.

Manny Pina (knee) said he's running at about 60 percent and will likely catch his first bullpen in 15 days.

"I think (I’ll) be ready to play like June, early June," Piña said. The 24-year-old could be optioned to Triple-A when he's healthy.

Royals placed C Manny Pina on the 60-day disabled list with a right knee injury.

The move clears him off the 40-man roster for the Royals' new acquisitions. Pina underwent surgery on his right knee in late-February and will likely be sidelined for the early part of the 2012 season.

Royals catcher Manuel Pina injured his right knee Wednesday afternoon at spring training.

Royals manager Ned Yost called the injury a "tweak," but wouldn't elaborate further. It doesn't sound like an overly troubling situation. Pina, 24, is likely to serve merely as organizational catching depth this season for KC.

Manuel Pina - C - Royals

Royals recalled C Manny Pina from Triple-A Omaha.

Pina appeared in a handful of games with the Royals in early August, but has spent the majority of the season at the Triple-A level, batting .238/.364/.371 with five homers, 25 RBI and a .735 OPS over 259 plate appearances. He'll serve as a third catcher down the stretch.

He was sent down to make room for Brayan Pena, who was activated from the paternity leave list. Pina, 24, went 3-for-14 (.214) with two doubles in a little under two weeks with the big club.

Pina was acquired back in 2009 from the Rangers in the Danny Gutierrez deal. He's batted just .242/.363/.376 with five homers at Triple-A but will give the Royals some depth while Matt Treanor (concussion) is out.

Royals acquired catcher Miguel Pina and outfielder Tim Smith from the Rangers for RHP Danny Gutierrez.

Pina is currently on the minor league disabled list and was batting just .259/.313/.393 before getting injured. He had no room for upward mobility in the Rangers' system and at the ripe age of 22, there's hope for a career resurgence. Hopefully he can take advantage of the new situation.
