Tigers re-signed C Manuel Pina to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Pina was acquired from the Royals in June and the Tigers have elected to keep him around as catching depth. He hit .268/.326/.380 with five homers between Double- and Triple-A this season.

Pina has hit .267/.337/.413 with two homers over 21 games between Double- and Triple-A for the Mariners. He'll give the Tigers some minor league catching depth.

It was reported back in November that Pina had re-signed with the Royals, but apparently that was premature. Pina will provide catcher depth at Triple-A for the M's.

Pina recently became a free agent after being outrighted off the 40-man roster and refusing a minor league assignment. While the 25-year-old backstop has re-signed with the Royals, he is eligible to be selected in December's Rule 5 Draft.

Royals manager Ned Yost called the injury a "tweak," but wouldn't elaborate further. It doesn't sound like an overly troubling situation. Pina, 24, is likely to serve merely as organizational catching depth this season for KC.

Pina appeared in a handful of games with the Royals in early August, but has spent the majority of the season at the Triple-A level, batting .238/.364/.371 with five homers, 25 RBI and a .735 OPS over 259 plate appearances. He'll serve as a third catcher down the stretch.
