Jeanmar Gomez pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday in a loss to the Yankees.
Gomez has allowed just one run -- that coming way back on Feb. 28 -- in 8 2/3 innings this spring, so any chance of him losing the closer's gig prior to Opening Day would seem to be gone. We'd still be surprise if he lasted as long in the ninth as he did last year. Mar 22 - 4:46 PM

Jeanmar Gomez gave up a solo homer in his inning of work Tuesday against the Orioles.

In spite of his ugly finish last year, Gomez has essentially been awarded the Phillies' closer gig to open 2017. We don't expect him to keep it all year long.
Feb 28 - 4:13 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Tuesday that Jeanmar Gomez "deserves to be called our closer at this point."

So much for competition. Gomez struggled miserably down the stretch last season and finished with a 4.85 ERA, but he did a respectable job for most of the year en route to saving 37 games, so Mackanin wants to give him the first crack at the gig to begin 2017. However, the leash might not be a long one. "We certainly have some guys to go to, with Neris and Benoit and [Edubray] Ramos," said Mackanin. "The guys who have shown closer's stuff. But, right now, Jeanmar's the closer."

Phillies and RHP Jeanmar Gomez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.2 million contract.

Gomez saved 37 games but finished with a 4.85 ERA with the Phillies last season. He was arbitration-eligible for the final time.
Jan 13 - 3:32 PM

Jeanmar Gomez fell apart in the eighth inning of Thursday's game against the Braves, allowing four runs and recording just one out in taking the loss.

Called on to preserve a 1-1 tie, Gomez instead issued a leadoff walk and, two batters later, gave up an RBI double to give the Braves the lead. The next four batters also reached base -- two on singles, one on a walk and one hit by a pitch -- to mercifully end Gomez' night. The miserable outing was the latest in a frustrating end to a brilliant year for the 28-year-old. Gomez has now allowed runs in six of his last seven appearances, raising his ERA to 4.85 in 68 2/3 innings overall. Even so, his 37 saves this season should earn him a nice raise in his final year of arbitration this winter.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Friday that while he still considers Jeanmar Gomez his closer, he will look at others for now to pitch the ninth inning.

The skipper is basically treating it like a hitter in a slump who needs a break. Of course, with so little time left in the season, there's no guarantee the struggling Gomez will get his job back. Look for Hector Neris to get the first chance to close.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said he may consider a change at closer.

There are only 11 games left in the season for Philly, but Jeanmar Gomez allowed three earned runs in the ninth inning Tuesday versus the White Sox and now has an un-closer-like 4.03 ERA for the year. Michael Mariot got the save Tuesday after Gomez was pulled, but Mariot's ERA this year is 5.19. Maybe it's time for Mackanin to give Hector Neris a spin.

Jeanmar Gomez was brought into the game with one out and two aboard in the ninth inning and was able to close the door for his 37th save on Wednesday versus the Pirates.

It wasn't pretty though. Gomez allowed a hit to center field by the first batter he faced but a runner was gunned down at home plate. He then threw a wild pitch that moved a runner to third base. He then buckled down to strike out Jason Rogers to end the game. Gomez has faced some adversity lately and Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has considered pulling him from the ninth-inning role despite his 37 saves. He has a 3.66 ERA and a weak 45 strikeouts in 66 1/3 frames.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said that Jeanmar Gomez will remain the closer despite his recent troubles.

Gomez blew his fifth save of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates. Mackanin indicated that he had considered making a change at the back of the bullpen, but for the time being, Gomez will have a chance to keep the job. For the season, he has pitched to a 3.70 ERA and 44/19 K/BB ratio over 65 2/3 innings. He is 42-of-47 in save chances.

Jeanmar Gomez blew a save without recording an out in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates.

He walked Francisco Cervelli to lead off the ninth and then gave up a double to Jordy Mercer before Sean Rodriguez put the Pirates ahead with a three-run homer. That was it for Gomez, who was pulled after failing to record an out. It's his fifth blown save in 42 chances this season.

Jeanmar Gomez struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Thursday against the Nationals to earn his 36th save.

Gomez gave up a one-out single but nothing more, striking out Wilson Ramos to end the game. The 28-year-old has had a few hiccups but has been largely good this year, posting a 3.34 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 64 2/3 innings. His 36 saves are fourth-most in the National League, a feat for one of the worst teams in baseball.

Jeanmar Gomez struck out a pair in a scoreless frame to record his 35th save of the season in Tuesday's win over the Marlins.

On to preserve a one-run lead, Gomez issued a one-out walk and then third baseman Maikel Franco made a throwing error to put two on. However, the closer was able to pitch out of it with a lineout and strikeout to end it. There's no doubt he's miscast as a closer, but Gomez has been quite effective for the Phils.

Jeanmar Gomez took the loss Friday against the Braves after failing to retire a batter while allowing four runs on four hits.

Ouch. Gomez entered the ballgame with the score tied in the top of the ninth inning and gave up four straight hits, including an RBI double to Freddie Freeman and an RBI single to Matt Kemp. The final two runs scored after he was pulled in favor of Colton Murray. Gomez has now allowed nine runs in seven innings over his last eight appearances. It might be time to give Hector Neris a chance out of the closer role down the stretch.

Jeanmar Gomez surrendered a two-run homer to Jedd Gyorko in the ninth inning Friday to blow a save against the Cardinals.

It was his fourth blown save of the season. Gomez entered the top of the ninth with a two-run lead and gave up a leadoff single to Yadier Molina before inducing a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jhonny Peralta. Gyorko then tied things up with a two-run blast to left. The Cardinals went on to win the game in 11 innings. Gomez doesn’t miss many bats, but he has done a good job keeping the ball in the ballpark. Gyorko’s blast was just the fourth he has allowed in 56 2/3 innings this year.

Jeanmar Gomez pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Dodgers on Thursday to earn his 32nd save.

Gomez' 32 saves rank fourth in the National League, an impressive feat for a guy on a team that's won just 57 games all year. Also impressive is his 2.75 ERA in 55 2/3 innings, a number that would be the lowest mark of his career if the season ended today. The Phillies aren't going to win many more games in 2016, but Gomez should continue getting the call when they do.
