Jeanmar Gomez worked into and out of trouble Saturday against the Indians, earning his eighth save of the season.
One-out singles by Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall created some stress for Gomez, but he got Rajai Davis to ground out and Jason Kipnis to line out to end the game. The Phillies have been one of the biggest surprises of the season's first month and Gomez has been one of the biggest surprises on the Phils, earning eight saves with a 1.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP after beginning the season as a middle reliever. Jeanmar Gomez tossed a scoreless ninth inning Thursday for his seventh save of the season.

Only David Robertson and Kenley Jansen have more saves than Gomez. You know, just like everyone predicted coming into the year. Gomez doesn’t fit the mold of a typical closer, but he hasn’t had any hiccups yet while posting a 1.93 ERA and 11/3 K/BB ratio over 14 innings.
Apr 28 - 9:26 PM

Jeanmar Gomez breezed through a perfect ninth inning in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Nationals to pick up his sixth save.

Gomez had only one career save prior to 2016 and has never posted a full-season ERA under 3.00 in the big leagues; however, he's enjoyed a dream start to the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.08 on Wednesday and now has six saves, which ranks as the seventh-most in the majors. The sustainability of this performance is unclear -- given his history and the fact that he's not really doing anything different -- but he's the clear closer in Philadelphia right now and should be owned in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.

Jeanmar Gomez converted his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.

Gomez made Philly fans a little nervous when a two-out Anthony Rendon single brought up Bryce Harper as the go-ahead run, but he got Harper to ground out to end it. The veteran right-hander isn't a great bet to continue producing as the Phillies' closer, but he's been good so far with a 2.25 ERA and five saves in five chances.
Apr 26 - 11:32 PM

Jeanmar Gomez grabbed his fourth save of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Padres, despite giving up a run in the ninth.

Gomez walked Derek Norris with two outs and then allowed him to score on a Brett Wallace single, but the right-hander got Alexei Ramirez to pop out to end the game. He's clearly the Phillies' closer at this point with four saves in a week. A below-average strikeout rate should limit his upside as a fantasy closer; however, he's safe to rely upon everyday for saves at this point.
Apr 13 - 10:24 PM

Jeanmar Gomez notched his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's win over the Padres.

Gomez allowed Melvin Upton to reach on an infield single to lead off the frame, but he then quickly induced three straight groundouts to preserve the three-run lead. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin hasn't officially named Gomez his closer yet, but he's clearly the guy at this point with three saves over the last four days.
Apr 12 - 10:34 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin stopped short of naming Jeanmar Gomez his closer on Sunday.

Gomez accomplished what David Hernandez and Dalier Hinojosa were unable to, earning saves on back-to-back days over the weekend. The right-hander has yielded just one hit in three innings this season. "Fireman of the year," Mackanin said with a smile after Gomez closed out Sunday's win against the Mets. "I don’t want to jump to conclusions here. Let’s keep playing it out until we see what happens."
Apr 11 - 8:59 AM

Jeanmar Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Mets on Saturday.

Gomez put down the Mets in order to earn the save, his first of the season and just the second of his career. The closer role in Philadelphia has been a revolving door this season, with manager Pete Mackanin cycling through relievers in hopes one will stick. Gomez' success Saturday surely means he'll get the next call as well, so owners chasing saves, take note. Just don't expect much.
Apr 9 - 10:17 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Thursday that Jeanmar Gomez is next in line for a save opportunity.

Mackanin wanted to use Gomez on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati, but the Phillies wound up losing 10-6. David Hernandez got lit up for three earned runs without recording an out on Opening Day and Dalier Hinojosa blew a save in brutal fashion Wednesday. Philadelphia's ninth-inning role is likely to be a carousel all season.
Apr 7 - 4:05 PM

Phillies and RHP Jeanmar Gomez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

Gomez has been something of a revelation since moving to a full-time relief role, owning a 3.19 ERA over 189 career relief innings. Last season, he posted a 3.01 ERA with the Phils. The right-hander has one more year of arbitration eligibility before becoming a free agent in 2018.
Jan 14 - 11:05 PM

Phillies purchased the contract of RHP Jeanmar Gomez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gomez, a non-roster invitee this spring, earned a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster after putting up a 0.79 ERA with seven strikeouts and one walk over 11 1/3 innings of work during Grapefruit League action. The 27-year-old was decent in long relief with the Pirates over the past two seasons and will likely serve in a similar role with rebuilding Philadelphia.

Phillies signed RHP Jeanmar Gomez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Gomez elected to become a free agent in November after being designated for assignment by the Pirates. The 26-year-old righty boasts a 3.28 ERA over his last 142 2/3 major league innings and should have a good shot at cracking the Phillies' Opening Day bullpen.

Jeanmar Gomez has elected to become a free agent.

Gomez was recently designated for assignment by the Pirates. The 26-year-old right-hander was due to be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after posting a 3.19 ERA and 38/23 K/BB ratio over 62 innings this season.

Pirates designated RHP Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.

The 26-year-old right-hander was arbitration eligible for the first time this winter. In 44 appearances out of the Pirates bullpen in 2014, Gomez registered a 3.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 38/23 K/BB mark in 62 innings.
Sat, Oct 25, 2014 10:11:00 AM

Jeanmar Gomez fired five innings of one-run ball Wednesday in the Pirates' win over the Mariners.

Gomez did not factor into the decision but certainly deserved the victory. He gave up only three hits and two walks, and the one run that he allowed was unearned. Gomez has a 2.76 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 49 innings this season, but he is headed back to the bullpen soon and can be ignored in most standard fantasy leagues.
