White Sox reassigned RHPs Jeanmar Gomez and Bruce Rondon to minor league camp.
Both pitchers were in the running for bullpen jobs with the club, and Gomez lost out despite a strong showing in camp. The right-hander posted a 1.08 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with eight strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. It's been a precipitous fall for Gomez in recent years, after he saved 37 games for the Phillies in 2016. Jeanmar Gomez is dealing with some soreness in his right shoulder.

"A little sore. Nothing of concern," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. Gomez will take a break Sunday but is expected to resume throwing soon.

White Sox signed RHP Jeanmar Gomez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Gomez saved 37 games in 2016 for Philadelphia and began the 2017 season as the Phillies' closer, but he quickly flamed out and was designated for assignment in June. He then spent time at Triple-A with the Brewers and Mariners. The 29-year-old right-hander will have a chance to earn a spot in the White Sox bullpen with a strong showing in the Cactus League this spring.

Mariners signed RHP Jeanmar Gomez to a minor league contract.

He's been assigned to Triple-A Tacoma. It's been a steep fall for Gomez, who flamed out quickly after opening the year as the Phillies' closer. Gomez also spent a couple weeks in the Brewers' farm system last month. The 29-year-old could see action in the Mariners' pen at some point but will need a strong showing in Tacoma in order to accomplish that.

Brewers signed RHP Jeanmar Gomez to a minor league contract.

The 29-year-old hurler entered the season as the Phillies' closer but registered a horrifying 7.25 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 22 1/3 innings before eventually getting released. He'll add bullpen depth in the minors for the Brewers.

Phillies released RHP Jeanmar Gomez.

The Phils designated their former closer for assignment last week and have now officially given him a pink slip. Gomez holds an ugly 7.25 ERA this season, but he should be able to land on his feet somewhere.

Phillies designated RHP Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.

Gomez opened the season as the Phillies' closer even after his fade last season, but he lasted about a week in the job and ultimately posted a 7.25 ERA over 18 appearances. The 29-year-old is making $4.2 million this season and Philly will have to eat what remains on that contract.

Jeanmar Gomez got one out in the ninth inning to snare a save against the Giants on Saturday.

He was summoned in emergency fashion after regular closer Hector Neris had already given up two runs on four hits in the inning. Gomez inherited runners on first and third with two outs. He quickly induced pinch-hitter Nick Hundley to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game. Gomez saved 37 games for the Phillies last year but has bombed to the tune of a 7.47 ERA in 15 2/3 innings so far this year. He is unlikely to get many more save chances this year.

Phillies activated RHP Jeanmar Gomez from the 10-day disabled list.

Gomez missed around three weeks with a right elbow impingement. The Phillies' Opening Day closer owns a brutal 7.94 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 11 1/3 innings this season.

Phillies placed RHP Jeanmar Gomez on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 6, with a right elbow impingement.

The severity of the issue isn't yet known. Gomez lost his closer role early in the year and has struggled with a 7.94 ERA in nine appearances.

Jeanmar Gomez suffered his first loss of the season on Friday, allowing a run on two hits without recording an out against the Nationals.

Hector Neris had already worked a scoreless ninth inning, so manager Pete Mackanin turned to his embattled former closer to start the 10th inning with the heart of the Nationals' lineup due up. Predictably, it didn't end well. Bryce Harper led off with a single and raced home to score the winning run on Daniel Murphy's double.

Jeanmar Gomez has been removed from the Phillies' closer role.

Gomez entered the season on thin ice after his struggles last September, and he recorded one shaky save and blew another among his first three appearances. That was evidently enough for manager Pete Mackanin, who will go with Joaquin Benoit in the ninth inning for now.

Jeanmar Gomez's closer role looks to be in jeopardy as the right-hander is set to meet with manager Pete Mackanin on Monday.

When asked about it after Gomez gave up three runs in a blown save against the Nationals on Sunday, Mackanin noted "I'll have something for you tomorrow. I need to talk with him." Gomez owns a 15.00 ERA through his first three outings of the season and already had just a tenuous grasp on the ninth-inning gig. It sounds as though Hector Neris could take over the closing duties as early as Monday.

Jeanmar Gomez gave up three earned runs in the top of the ninth inning but lucked into his first win Sunday against the Nationals.

Gomez yielded a walk, a single, and a game-tying three-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman in another ugly outing, but Cesar Hernandez bailed him out with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has already noted that Gomez has a weak grip on the closer's role, and the right-hander now holds a 15.00 ERA through his first three regular-season appearances. Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit remain good roster stashes in standard fantasy leagues.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin admitted to being "concerned" about closer Jeanmar Gomez's struggles on Monday versus the Reds.

Gomez ultimately recorded the save, but not before giving up a single and a two-run home run. "I'm concerned," Mackanin said. "I had two guys up in the 'pen in that ninth inning [Joely Rodriguez and Pat Neshek]. He's just not getting the ball down the way he did when he was successful. I want to make sure that he gets opportunities, but at the same time, I don't want to let games slip away. He has to execute. Like I said, for me, he's earned the right to be the closer for right now. But he's got to get the ball down." Mackanin also added of his closer situation that "I certainly have options." Those other options, probably in order, are Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit. Both relievers are worthy stashes given Gomez's pedestrian stuff and tenuous grip on the job.
