Jeanmar Gomez suffered his first loss of the season on Friday, allowing a run on two hits without recording an out against the Nationals.

Hector Neris had already worked a scoreless ninth inning, so manager Pete Mackanin turned to his embattled former closer to start the 10th inning with the heart of the Nationals' lineup due up. Predictably, it didn't end well. Bryce Harper led off with a single and raced home to score the winning run on Daniel Murphy's double.

Jeanmar Gomez has been removed from the Phillies' closer role.

Gomez entered the season on thin ice after his struggles last September, and he recorded one shaky save and blew another among his first three appearances. That was evidently enough for manager Pete Mackanin, who will go with Joaquin Benoit in the ninth inning for now.

Jeanmar Gomez's closer role looks to be in jeopardy as the right-hander is set to meet with manager Pete Mackanin on Monday.

When asked about it after Gomez gave up three runs in a blown save against the Nationals on Sunday, Mackanin noted "I'll have something for you tomorrow. I need to talk with him." Gomez owns a 15.00 ERA through his first three outings of the season and already had just a tenuous grasp on the ninth-inning gig. It sounds as though Hector Neris could take over the closing duties as early as Monday.

Jeanmar Gomez gave up three earned runs in the top of the ninth inning but lucked into his first win Sunday against the Nationals.

Gomez yielded a walk, a single, and a game-tying three-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman in another ugly outing, but Cesar Hernandez bailed him out with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has already noted that Gomez has a weak grip on the closer's role, and the right-hander now holds a 15.00 ERA through his first three regular-season appearances. Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit remain good roster stashes in standard fantasy leagues.
Apr 9 - 5:40 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin admitted to being "concerned" about closer Jeanmar Gomez's struggles on Monday versus the Reds.

Gomez ultimately recorded the save, but not before giving up a single and a two-run home run. "I'm concerned," Mackanin said. "I had two guys up in the 'pen in that ninth inning [Joely Rodriguez and Pat Neshek]. He's just not getting the ball down the way he did when he was successful. I want to make sure that he gets opportunities, but at the same time, I don't want to let games slip away. He has to execute. Like I said, for me, he's earned the right to be the closer for right now. But he's got to get the ball down." Mackanin also added of his closer situation that "I certainly have options." Those other options, probably in order, are Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit. Both relievers are worthy stashes given Gomez's pedestrian stuff and tenuous grip on the job.
Apr 3 - 10:43 PM

Jeanmar Gomez earned his first save Monday despite yielding two runs to the Reds in the bottom of the ninth.

Scott Schebler hit a leadoff single and Scooter Gennett slugged a two-out, two-run homer, but Phillies manager Pete Mackanin stuck with his closer and Gomez was able to induce a game-ending flyout from Billy Hamilton. Philly has one of the more tenuous ninth-inning situations in the majors. Joaquin Benoit and Hector Neris look like worthwhile stashes.
Apr 3 - 7:41 PM

Jeanmar Gomez will open the 2017 regular season as the Phillies' closer.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin confirmed that news Thursday in camp. Gomez was sharp this spring, registering a 0.93 ERA over 9 2/3 innings in the Grapefruit League, but he's a lower-tier fantasy option at closer given his poor numbers last year and the talent behind him in the Philadelphia bullpen. Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit will work in setup roles for now.
Mar 30 - 10:37 AM

Jeanmar Gomez pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday in a loss to the Yankees.

Gomez has allowed just one run -- that coming way back on Feb. 28 -- in 8 2/3 innings this spring, so any chance of him losing the closer's gig prior to Opening Day would seem to be gone. We'd still be surprise if he lasted as long in the ninth as he did last year.
Mar 22 - 4:46 PM

Jeanmar Gomez gave up a solo homer in his inning of work Tuesday against the Orioles.

In spite of his ugly finish last year, Gomez has essentially been awarded the Phillies' closer gig to open 2017. We don't expect him to keep it all year long.
Feb 28 - 4:13 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Tuesday that Jeanmar Gomez "deserves to be called our closer at this point."

So much for competition. Gomez struggled miserably down the stretch last season and finished with a 4.85 ERA, but he did a respectable job for most of the year en route to saving 37 games, so Mackanin wants to give him the first crack at the gig to begin 2017. However, the leash might not be a long one. "We certainly have some guys to go to, with Neris and Benoit and [Edubray] Ramos," said Mackanin. "The guys who have shown closer's stuff. But, right now, Jeanmar's the closer."

Phillies and RHP Jeanmar Gomez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.2 million contract.

Gomez saved 37 games but finished with a 4.85 ERA with the Phillies last season. He was arbitration-eligible for the final time.
Jan 13 - 3:32 PM

Jeanmar Gomez fell apart in the eighth inning of Thursday's game against the Braves, allowing four runs and recording just one out in taking the loss.

Called on to preserve a 1-1 tie, Gomez instead issued a leadoff walk and, two batters later, gave up an RBI double to give the Braves the lead. The next four batters also reached base -- two on singles, one on a walk and one hit by a pitch -- to mercifully end Gomez' night. The miserable outing was the latest in a frustrating end to a brilliant year for the 28-year-old. Gomez has now allowed runs in six of his last seven appearances, raising his ERA to 4.85 in 68 2/3 innings overall. Even so, his 37 saves this season should earn him a nice raise in his final year of arbitration this winter.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Friday that while he still considers Jeanmar Gomez his closer, he will look at others for now to pitch the ninth inning.

The skipper is basically treating it like a hitter in a slump who needs a break. Of course, with so little time left in the season, there's no guarantee the struggling Gomez will get his job back. Look for Hector Neris to get the first chance to close.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said he may consider a change at closer.

There are only 11 games left in the season for Philly, but Jeanmar Gomez allowed three earned runs in the ninth inning Tuesday versus the White Sox and now has an un-closer-like 4.03 ERA for the year. Michael Mariot got the save Tuesday after Gomez was pulled, but Mariot's ERA this year is 5.19. Maybe it's time for Mackanin to give Hector Neris a spin.
