Mitchell, 24, began the season with Triple-A Charlotte, but he batted just .132 (7-for-53) with two extra-base hits (zero homers) and 27 strikeouts in 12 games. The 2009 first-round pick will try to get back on track against lesser competition.

White Sox optioned OF Jared Mitchell, RHP Andre Rienzo, C Josh Phegley and RHP Jhan Marinez to Triple-A Charlotte.

Mitchell showed off some of his promise, hitting .367 (11-for-30) with a homer, five RBI and a pair of steals in 13 spring games. The White Sox outfield was just too crowded for him to crack the Opening Day roster. Expect to see him at the big league level at some point during the 2013 season.

Jared Mitchell - OF - White Sox

White Sox purchased the contract of OF Jared Mitchell from Triple-A Charlotte.

Mitchell, 24, batted .237/.358/.420 with 11 home runs, 67 RBI, 21 stolen bases and a .778 OPS in 130 games this season between Double- and Triple-A. He still strikes out way too much, but finally appears to have his speed back following his ankle injury in 2010.

Jared Mitchell - OF - White Sox

White Sox outfield prospect Jared Mitchell underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle on Tuesday.

The surgery was called a success -- as they all are -- but the 21-year-old is expected to miss the entire 2010 season. He'll begin rehabbing in approximately 4-6 weeks. Mitchell suffered the injury while making a spectacular catch last Friday. It's a tough blow for Mitchell, who was selected by the White Sox in the first round of last year's First-Year Player Draft. He was recently ranked as the organization's No. 1 prospect by Baseball America.

Jared Mitchell, who was carted off in Friday's game, could miss the entire 2010 season after tearing a tendon in his left ankle.

This is a huge blow for Mitchell, who had been progressing well through the White Sox's system. He's a phenomenal athlete, so coming back from this shouldn't be the issue, but the loss of development time is what may hold Mitchell back going forward. Hopefully he'll be able to return for a bit of action at the end of the year, but even that seems unlikely now.

White Sox outfield prospect Jared Mitchell was carted off the field Friday after suffering an apparent leg injury while making a diving catch.

Mitchell was selected 23rd overall out of LSU in last year's first-year player draft and is off to a decent start this spring. He went down pretty hard Friday, but it's not clear if the injury is serious or if the cart was brought out as a precautionary measure. Stay tuned.

Jared Mitchell - OF - White Sox

Jared Mitchell doubled twice, walked and scored three runs Saturday as a White Sox split-squad took down the Dodgers 8-4.

The White Sox are plenty excited about Mitchell, who was taken 23rd overall in last year's draft. He's due to start off this year in high-A ball after hitting .296/.417/.435 in 34 games for low Single-A Kannapolis in his pro debut.

Mitchell was selected 23rd overall out of Louisiana State University. The 20-year-old boasts 20-to-25 home run potential and good speed. He will make his professional debut with Single-A Kannapolis on Thursday.

White Sox selected LSU outfielder Jared Mitchell with the 23rd pick in the draft.

Mitchell might have 20- or 25-homer ability, but his long swing could lead to low averages. Also, he's no sure thing to last in center field. He has the raw speed, but he's not a great defender right now and his arm is below average. If he moves to left, he may not have the bat to make it.
