The Orioles plan to move prospect right-hander Matt Hobgood to the bullpen this season.

Hobgood, the No. 5 overall pick in 2009, didn't pitch at all last season due to rotator cuff surgery. The Orioles are hopeful that he'll get his velocity back quicker as a reliever. He's expected to begin the year with Single-A Delmarva.

Orioles prospect right-hander Matt Hobgood (shoulder) is expected to be medically cleared for spring training.

The former fifth overall pick, Hobgood hasn't pitched since appearing in eight games with the Orioles' Low-A affiliate in 2011. Now a full year removed from rotator cuff surgery, he should be on track to resume his career in Baltimore's minor league system, and is confident that he'll be able return for the start of the 2013 season.

Matt Hobgood will undergo surgery on April 2 to "size down" his right rotator cuff.

He's expected to miss the entire season. The No. 5 overall pick in 2009, Hobgood struggled terribly at Single-A Aberdeen last season, posting a 10.46 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 13/23 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings. He'll be hoping to come back healthy in 2013.

The Orioles will send pitching prospect Matt Hobgood (shoulder) to the instructional league.

The No. 5 overall pick in 2009, Hobgood struggled terribly with Single-A Aberdeen this season, posting a 10.46 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 13/23 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings. He dealt with a strained rotator cuff last winter and was recently shut down with shoulder soreness. The young righty will throw 15-20 innings in the instructional league in preparation for next spring.

The Orioles have placed 2009 first-round pick Matt Hobgood on the seven-day disabled list with shoulder soreness.

Hobgood, who dealt with a strained rotator cuff last winter, has been getting destroyed since being promoted to Single-A Aberdeen, posting a 10.46 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 13/23 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings. If that stat line is any indication, he's been pitching hurt. Hobgood is only 21 years old, but it's beginning to look like he's facing a long climb to the big leagues.

2009 first-round pick Matt Hobgood has been cleared to begin a throwing program after missing time with a rotator cuff strain.

Hobgood is likely two months away from joining a minor league team. The 20-year-old will head to high-A ball once healthy.

Orioles prospect Matt Hobgood still has about a month to go in his rehab from a strained rotator cuff.

The Orioles plan to reevaluate Hobgood around late March or early April. The 20-year-old posted a 4.40 ERA and a 5.6 K/9 over 21 starts at the Single-A level last season. Those aren't great numbers, but he's still very young and still has great promise. Once he's healthy, the O's will probably get him started back at Single-A.

Orioles officials are optimistic that prospect right-hander Matt Hobgood (shoulder) will not require surgery.

However, they won't know for sure until they learn the results of an MRI. Hobgood, 20, has been rehabbing a strained rotator cuff this offseason. The former 2009 first-round pick had a 4.40 ERA over 21 starts with Single-A Delmarva last season, averaging 5.6 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. The right-hander was recently ranked as the organization's No. 15 prospect by Baseball America.

Orioles prospect RHP Matt Hobgood (shoulder) will be examined by team physicians in Sarasota later this month.

Hobgood has been rehabbing a strained rotator cuff, so the examination will determine whether he has made any progress. The 20-year-old right-hander has yet to begin a throwing program, so it's highly unlikely he'll begin the season on time. The former 2009 first-round pick posted a disappointing 4.40 ERA over 21 starts with Single-A Delmarva last season, averaging 5.6 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

Orioles prospect right-hander Matt Hobgood told Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com that he isn't sure exactly when or how he hurt his shoulder.

Hobgood was recently diagnosed with a strained rotator cuff, but he hasn't been anywhere close to the velocity he had when the Orioles chose him fifth overall in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. "I wasn't hiding anything before the draft, they didn't get damaged goods," said Hobgood. "I didn't ask to be chosen there, I went out and had the senior year I did because I put in hard work and I've continued to do that." Calling the diagnosis "a minor setback," Hobgood is now on a four-to-six week rehab program. The 20-year-old right-hander is confident that he will be able pitch during the 2011 season.

Orioles prospect right-hander Matt Hobgood is dealing with a shoulder injury which will likely delay his start to the 2011 season.

Hobgood, who was selected fifth overall in 2009, made visits to Orioles team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens and orthopedist Dr. James Andrews after feeling some discomfort while playing catch about two weeks ago. He was diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain and will be reevaluated in mid Febuary. "We’ll take the four to six weeks and then look at it," said Orioles director of player development John Stockstill. "It might be a minor setback, it might be more than that. We’re not going to know until he goes through this." Hobgood, 20, posted a 4.40 ERA over 21 starts with Single-A Delmarva last season, averaging 5.6 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

Matthew Hobgood allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings for low Single-A Delmarva on Tuesday.

While a lot of high school pitchers taken in the first round begin the following year in extended spring training, Hobgood, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, was sent right to full-season ball. He has a 2.70 ERA and a 14/6 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings.
