Josh Phegley was admitted to a hospital Friday with synovitis in his right knee.

Synovitis is an inflammatory disease within the membrane that lines the knee joint. Phegley, who had surgery on July 5 to remove a cruciate ligament cyst from the same knee, was originally scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday. It's unclear what the next step will be.

Josh Phegley (knee, strep) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Josh Phegley (knee) was able to get into a crouch to catch a flat ground throwing session Thursday.

It appears to be the last hurdle he needed to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, as he's already been hitting and running. Phegley is on track to be activated from the disabled list on September 1.

Josh Phegley (knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on September 1.

Phegley underwent surgery in early July to remove a cruciate ligament cyst on his right knee. He's eligible to return on August 31, but the A's will wait an extra day until rosters expand.

Jul 5 - 6:24 PM

Athletics placed C Josh Phegley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 2, with right knee inflammation.

It's the second time he's been on the DL with the injury, which is especially worrisome for a catcher. How long Phegley will be sidelined is unclear. Matt McBridge has been recalled to take his place.
Jul 3 - 12:48 PM

The Athletics are expected to place Josh Phegley (knee) on the disabled list.

He's dealing with right knee discomfort, an injury he's battled off and on all year. With the All-Star break coming up, Phegley would only have to miss 11 games if he's activated when first eligible on July 17.
