It appears to be the last hurdle he needed to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, as he's already been hitting and running. Phegley is on track to be activated from the disabled list on September 1.

Phegley underwent surgery in early July to remove a cruciate ligament cyst on his right knee. He's eligible to return on August 31, but the A's will wait an extra day until rosters expand.

It's the second time he's been on the DL with the injury, which is especially worrisome for a catcher. How long Phegley will be sidelined is unclear. Matt McBridge has been recalled to take his place.

He's dealing with right knee discomfort, an injury he's battled off and on all year. Phegley felt better after receiving a cortisone shot in mid-May but the injury started bothering him again on Saturday. With the All-Star break coming up, Phegley would only have to miss 11 games if he's activated when first eligible on July 17.

Phegley made an early exit from Tuesday's game following a HBP on his left knee, but he avoided a significant injury and even started at catcher Wednesday versus Texas. Phegley, 28, is batting .295/.343/.410 in 61 at-bats this season for the last-place A's.

Alex Claudio plunked Phegley in the knee to lead off the ninth inning. He was in some pain after the hit-by-pitch and was removed for a pinch-running Tyler Ladendorf. Further information regarding the severity of the injury should be provided on Wednesday.

Phegley will play at least four games on the rehab assignment before he's cleared to return to the A's. In the meantime, Matt McBride will continue to serve as the primary backup for Stephen Vogt.
