Josh Phegley doubled and drove in a run Wednesday in Oakland’s 3-0 win over the Tigers.
Phegley gave the A’s an insurance run with an RBI double in the ninth. He scored later in the frame on Dustin Fowler’s double to right center as Oakland stretched its lead to 3-0. Phegley also reached on a walk in the seventh. He’s spent most of the year in Triple-A, logging just 24 at-bats at the major league level. Needless to say, Phegley is not close to being a fantasy consideration. Jun 27 - 11:03 PM

Athletics recalled C Josh Phegley from Triple-A Nashville.

Phegley is added to the roster in place of Bruce Maxwell, who was placed on the restricted list due to his inability to travel to Toronto. The 30-year-old backstop was activated from the disabled list on April 22, and since his return he's hit .220/.320/.412 with three homers for Nashville. He'll serve as Jonathan Lucroy's backup for the series, and likely won't be used unless necessary.

Mar 28 - 2:23 PM

Josh Phegley has two broken fingers on his right hand and will be shut down for two weeks at minimum.

As you can probably guess, the right hand is the one he throws with. Phegley is trying to compete with Bruce Maxwell for the right to be the backup to recently signed backstop Jonathan Lucroy, but that will be tough to do now that he won't be able to play anymore Cactus League games. When he does recover, expect Phegley to head to Triple-A Nashville and to serve as insurance for Lucroy and Maxwell.
Mar 18 - 3:30 PM

Josh Phegley lost 12 pounds during the offseason.

More important than the weight loss to Phegley is that he lost seven percent of his body fat and is now down to 16 percent overall. He got there thanks to a disciplined offseason program. The hope is that the improved conditioning will help him stay on the field. Phegley dealt with knee issues in 2016 and was sidelined with a concussion and an oblique strain last year. As of now, Bruce Maxwell is expected to be the A's primary catcher in 2018.
