Josh Phegley (flu, shoulder) might not play until Friday.

Phegley is getting over the flu and has been dealing with some shoulder soreness, so the A's will ease him into things. The 28-year-old batted .249 with nine home runs and a .749 OPS over 73 games last season and is set to serve as Stephen Vogt's backup in 2016.

Josh Phegley (concussion) has officially been ruled out for the season.

Phegley hinted at it earlier Tuesday and A's manager Bob Melvin made it official. The catcher just hasn't experienced enough improvement with his concussion, which occurred when he was hit with Billy Butler's bat in a freak accident during batting practice last Friday. With Stephen Vogt (groin) not ready to catch yet until at least this weekend, the A's catching duties will be left to Carson Blair and Bryan Anderson for now.

Josh Phegley (concussion) said Tuesday that "it's not looking good" for his return this season.

Phegley was diagnosed with a concussion last Friday and evidently hasn't experienced any improvements with the symptoms yet. If his season is indeed over, he'll finish with a .249/.300/.449 batting line and nine homers. With Stephen Vogt (groin) also not ready to catch yet, the A's catching duties will be left to Carson Blair and Bryan Anderson.

Josh Phegley has been diagnosed with a concussion.

He suffered the injury during a freak accident at batting practice on Friday. With rosters expanded, the A's don't need to place him on the disabled list. Carson Blair started at catcher Saturday against the Astros.

Josh Phegley went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Thursday's win over the Mariners.

Phegley has been stellar in a part-time role for the A's, slashing .280/.333/.523 in 107 at-bats. He's also been an asset throwing out potential base robbers.

Josh Phegley doubled in a pair of runs and smacked a solo homer in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

Phegley let a run score on a passed ball in the game, but he certainly made up for it with his bat. The A's have received incredible production at the plate from their catchers this season, as Stephen Vogt is going to be an All-Star and Phegley is hitting .297/.350/.538 with four homers as his backup.

Josh Phegley swatted his third home run of the season in Thursday's loss to the Padres.

His solo blast off Padres starter Ian Kennedy in the sixth inning was the A's lone run in the contest. He has seen an uptick in playing time in recent weeks with Stephen Vogt playing more first base while Ike Davis was sidelined, and has more than held his own, slashing .286/.337/.488 with three long balls and nine RBI in 84 at-bats.

Josh Phegley went 1-for-4 with a two-run triple in Thursday afternoon's win over the Tigers.

Regular catcher Stephen Vogt was manning first base in the afternoon contest and backup catcher Phegley made the most of the starting opportunity by hitting his first career triple in the second inning. The two-run three-bagger off Tigers starter Shane Greene increased the score to 3-0 in a game the A's would eventually win 7-5. In 60 at-bats this season, Phegley's hitting a respectable .283/.333/.400.

Josh Phegley went 0-for-4 as the Athletics were shut out by the Giants in Friday's exhibition game.

The hitless night dropped Phegley to .222 (12-for-54) with two homers and 11 RBI in Cactus League play. He will serve as the primary backup to A's catcher Stephen Vogt this season, but will hold little fantasy value outside of AL-only formats.

Josh Phegley went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 8-1 win over the Reds.

Phegley took Aroldis Chapman out to center, padding the Athletics' lead to 7-0 at the time. The 27-year-old now has two homers and eight RBI on the spring. Phegley will be backing up Stephen Vogt behind the plate for the A's this season.

Josh Phegley led the Athletics offensive attack in Friday's 7-2 Cactus League victory over the Diamondbacks, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Phegley also scored a pair of runs in the contest. The 27-year-old came to the A's as part of the Jeff Samardzija deal with the White Sox and is expected to serve as the primary backup to starting catcher Stephen Vogt. His power potential could be useful in deeper AL-only formats that require two catchers.

Athletics acquired C Josh Phegley, RHP Chris Bassitt, 1B Rangel Ravelo, and INF Marcus Semien from the White Sox for RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Michael Ynoa.

The White Sox have a long depth chart at catcher, so they felt comfortable throwing Phegley into this deal. The 26-year-old has not performed well at the major league level, though it could be argued he was never given much of a shot in Chicago. Phegley did bat .274/.331/.530 with 23 home runs and 75 RBI in 107 games this past season at Triple-A.

White Sox recalled C Josh Phegley from Triple-A Charlotte.

Phegley will serve as a third catcher for the White Sox in September. He's not a fantasy option.
Tue, Sep 2, 2014 02:44:00 PM

White Sox optioned C Josh Phegley, RHP Andre Rienzo and LHP Eric Surkamp to Triple-A Charlotte; reassigned INFs Andy Wilkins and RHPs Chris Beck and Cody Winiarski to minor league camp.

Tyler Flowers will be Chicago's Opening Day catcher, and Rule 5 pick Adrian Nieto, barring something unforeseen, appears ticketed for backup duty. If so, Nieto will make history and become the first catcher since Butch Wynegar in 1976 (and second overall) to leap from Class-A to the bigs. Rienzo and Surkamp will both be back with the Sox at some point in 2014.
