Phegley will be gone from the club for the next handful of games to be with his wife Jessica as she gives birth. Ryan Lavarnway has been called up from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding roster move.
Jul 5 - 12:40 PM

Josh Phegley clubbed his second home run of the season in a losing effort against the Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

His solo shot off of C.C. Sabathia in the seventh inning pulled the A's to within a run at 3-2, but that would be as close as they would get. Phegley finished the afternoon 2-for-4 and is now hitting .250/.263/.429 with a pair of homers and six RBI in his limited action this season.
May 27 - 4:26 PM

Athletics activated C Josh Phegley from the 7-day concussion disabled list.

He missed the minimum seven days. Bruce Maxwell is still on the roster, so it appears the A's will go with three catchers for a while.
May 12 - 2:02 PM

Josh Phegley (concussion) is on track to be activated on Friday.

That's the first day he's eligible to return from the 7-day concussion disabled list. Bruce Maxwell will return to Triple-A Nashville after filling in as Oakland's backup catcher.
May 9 - 8:13 PM

Josh Phegley (concussion) will catch in an extended spring training game on Monday.

He's eligible to return from the 7-day concussion disabled list Thursday and it sounds like he should be ready at that time. Phegley will go back to getting starts versus lefties when he's ready.
May 7 - 2:39 PM

Athletics placed C Josh Phegley on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Phegley took a ball hard off his mask on Wednesday night and will be shut down completely for the next couple of days. Bruce Maxwell has been promoted from Triple-A Nashville to back up Stephen Vogt.
May 4 - 9:55 AM

Josh Phegley will likely be placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list on Thursday after taking a ball off his mask against the Twins on Wednesday.

The life of a major league catcher. Prior to being hit in the mask, Phegley was working on an 0-for-3 day. The A's ran him through a battery of tests after he left the game. An exact timetable for Phegley's return to action has not yet been laid out, but should receive clarity once the backstop is further removed from the initial head injury.
May 3 - 11:47 PM

Josh Phegley (knee) has been fully cleared to catch.

Phegley needed surgery last July to remove a cyst from his right knee and as he tried to return fluid would accumulate in the joint every time he had to squat. That left him unable to catch two days in a row. "Basically, they said I’m normal this spring, no restrictions, ready to go," the A's likely backup told reporters on Tuesday. "They view me as a regular guy, no worries. Hopefully it continues that way."
Feb 14 - 5:25 PM

Josh Phegley (knee) has passed all of his strength and running tests and says he is 100 percent.

Phegley had surgery to remove a cyst from his right knee last July and then was shut down in the second half after developing synovitis in the knee. Manager Bob Melvin said the club will ease Phegley into things in spring training, but he'll be fine for Opening Day. He's competing for the backup job with Bruce Maxwell behind Stephen Vogt.
Jan 29 - 9:42 AM

Josh Phegley (knee) is not expected to play again this season.

Phegley was admitted to a hospital Friday with synovitis in his right knee. The good news is that he's expected to get out of the hospital on Tuesday, but a return to the field in September just isn't realistic at this point.

Josh Phegley was admitted to a hospital Friday with synovitis in his right knee.

Synovitis is an inflammatory disease within the membrane that lines the knee joint. Phegley, who had surgery on July 5 to remove a cruciate ligament cyst from the same knee, was originally scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday. It's unclear what the next step will be.

Josh Phegley (knee, strep) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Phegley's rehab from a knee injury was stalled by strep throat, but he's over it now. The expectation is that he will be activated from the disabled list September 1.

Josh Phegley (knee) was able to get into a crouch to catch a flat ground throwing session Thursday.

It appears to be the last hurdle he needed to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, as he's already been hitting and running. Phegley is on track to be activated from the disabled list on September 1.
