Fryer is a plus defender but owns a career .232/.320/.300 batting line over parts of seven big league seasons. He'll be slated to start 2018 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Cardinals designated C Eric Fryer for assignment.

Fryer hit an ugly .155/.277/.197 this season and hardly played as Yadier Molina's backup. He's being replaced on the roster by Carson Kelly.

Cardinals purchased the contract of C Eric Fryer from Triple-A Memphis.

The Red Birds inked Fryer to a minors contract in December. With a career .254/.332/.328 triple-slash across 256 major league at-bats, there is no fantasy intrigue here. The veteran backstop will serve as backup to Yadier Molina during the coming campaign.

Cardinals signed C Eric Fryer to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

It's a minor league contract, but Fryer is expected to be Yadier Molina's backup in 2017. He batted .368/.415/.421 in limited duty for the Cards last season before a roster crunch cost him his spot. The career .254/.332/.328 hitter will eventually give way to top prospect Carson Kelly when he's ready.

Pirates non-tendered C Eric Fryer.

The 31-year-old backstop hit .267/.336/.319 with no homers and 13 RBI in 133 plate appearances between the Cardinals and Pirates in 2016. He will look for another opportunity on the open market but may have to settle for a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Pirates activated C Eric Fryer from the paternity leave list.

Fryer left the team after his wife gave birth to twins on Saturday. The Pirates optioned Elias Diaz to Triple-A Indianapolis to clear a spot on the active roster.

Pirates placed C Eric Fryer on the paternity leave list.

Fryer's wife gave birth to twins on Saturday morning, so he certainly has his hands full for the next couple of days. Elias Diaz was recalled from Triple-A to take his place on the roster.

Eric Fryer got revenge on his former team Tuesday, going 2-for-4 and notching three RBI in the Pirates' 5-2 defeat of the Cardinals.

Fryer was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on Saturday and was making his first start as a member of the Bucs. It was a good first impression for Pirates fans, as he collected an RBI single in the fifth inning and added a two-run double in the sixth. Fryer was the victim of a numbers crunch in St. Louis, but the 30-year-old is hitting .381/.422/.452 this season and could earn plenty of playing time in Pittsburgh with Francisco Cervelli sidelined.

Pirates claimed C Eric Fryer off waivers from the Cardinals.

It's not a surprise that Fryer was scooped up after the Cards designated him for assignment, as he batted .368 (14-for-38) two doubles and five RBI over 24 games for them and flashed good defense. The Pirates are hurting for catching depth with Francisco Cervelli (hand) on the disabled list and Chris Stewart (knee, ankle) banged up.

Cardinals designated C Eric Fryer for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Bryan Pena on the active roster. Fryer has played well in sporadic duty with the Cardinals this season, batting .368 (14-for-38) two doubles and five RBI over 24 games.

Eric Fryer went 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, and two RBI on Sunday against the Reds.

Fryer drew his first start of the season Sunday with Yadier Molina finally taking a rest and the career backup now stands 6-for-6 as a member of the Cardinals. Perhaps the hot start will earn him a bit more playing time -- and allow Molina to get more early breathers -- but Fryer is really just holding down the fort until Brayan Pena is recovered from a knee injury.

Cardinals purchased the contract of C Eric Fryer from Triple-A Memphis.

Fryer will function as the primary backup to Yadier Molina while Brayan Pena is sidelined following his knee surgery. The 29-year-old won't hold any fantasy value, even in the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Cardinals signed C Eric Fryer to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Fryer elected free agency late last month after being outrighted off the Twins' 40-man roster. The 29-year-old catcher is highly doubtful to crack the Cardinals' Opening Day roster next spring. He will function as organizational depth at the backstop position.
