Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated Monday that Marc Rzepczynski's demotion wasn't just performance-based.
Mo said that he "wasn't really seeing that drive this year" from Rzepczynski. "I noticed it early in spring, and it sort of just carried over. … You're coming in with opportunities to do things, and it just wasn't getting done." The left-hander has posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings since the start of the 2012 season. He'll try to get refocused and improve his results at Triple-A Memphis for a while. Cardinals optioned LHP Marc Rzepczynski to Triple-A Memphis.

"Scrabble" has posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings since the start of the 2012 season. He's simply not an effective lefty specialist at the moment.

Marc Rzepczynski (eye) will return to Grapefruit League action on Saturday.

Rzepczynski has been out of action for a week after being struck below the eye by some debris while on a golf course. He's pretty much back to normal, though, and should be fine to start the season.
Mar 15 - 12:16 PM

Marc Rzepczynski was told by a doctor Wednesday that 95 percent of the inflammation is gone from his left eye.

Rzepczynski has another doctor's appointment on Friday morning and is hoping to be cleared at that time to return to Grapefruit League games. The lefty reliever should be fine for the start of the 2013 regular season.

Marc Rzepczynski (eye) has been cleared to resume throwing.

He hopes to throw a bullpen session Tuesday. An exam revealed that Rzepczynski has 89% improvement in his left eye, which he will get looked at again Wednesday. It sounds like he'll be fine for the start of the season.
Mar 11 - 12:28 PM

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny believes that Marc Rzepczynski (eye) will "be laid up for a while."

"I think he’s going to be laid up for a while," said Matheny. "He can’t get work if he’s in bed, so it’s definitely not helping him get ready for the season." Rzepczynski, who was injured Friday when a golf ball struck him near his left eye, will be re-evaluated Monday. A clearer timetable should be known at that time, but it sounds like a DL stint to start the season is possible.
Mar 10 - 10:09 AM

Marc Rzepczynski (eye) said that his vision is starting to return following a freak accident on a golf course Friday.

Rzepczynski's eye and the area around it were "deeply bruised," but there's a "95 percent chance" he won't have any permanent damage. The Cardinals are expected to reevaluate him Monday, so we should have a timetable for his return by early next week.
Mar 9 - 8:49 AM

Mark Rzepczynski suffered a freak injury on Friday when a golf ball reportedly struck him near his left eye.

Rzepczynski, who had been shut down for the past couple of days because of a sore biceps muscle, had been scheduled to pitch on Saturday but will no longer do so. There is no word yet on how long this injury could sideline him, but it could impact his ability to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 8 - 7:53 PM

Marc Rzepczynski (biceps) is scheduled to pitch an inning on Thursday against the Yankees.

The left-hander has been shut down for the past couple of days because of a sore biceps muscle, but it was never a major concern in Cardinals camp. "Scrabble" has ample time to get properly tuned up for the start of the season.
Mar 6 - 8:55 AM

Marc Rzepczynski will not throw for the next couple of days because of a sore biceps.

Rzepczynski told reporters Monday in Cardinals camp that he experiences some level of biceps fatigue every spring and that he should ultimately be fine. The 27-year-old left-hander posted an underwhelming 4.24 ERA in 70 appearances last season for the Cardinals.
Mar 4 - 9:28 AM

Cardinals avoided arbitration with LHP Marc Rzepczynski by agreeing to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

They settled at the midpoint of figures that were exchanged last month. He has a chance to earn an additional $50,000 in incentives. Rzepczynski, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, posted a 4.24 ERA and 33/17 K/BB ratio over 46 2/3 innings last season.
Feb 1 - 2:07 PM

Marc Rzepczynski requested $1.3 million and was offered $900,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Rzepczynski is arbitration-eligible for the first time after posting a 4.24 ERA and 33/17 K/BB ratio over 46 2/3 innings last season. With such a small gap between the two sides, look for common ground to be found in the coming days.
Jan 18 - 7:12 PM

The Cardinals are expected to re-sign Marc Rzepczynski.

Rzepczynski is arbitration-eligible for the first time and wasn't considered a lock to return. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said he doesn't anticipate non-tendering anyone else this offseason after releasing Kyle McClellan. Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs and Edward Mujica will all be brought back.

MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch lists Marc Rzepczynski as a non-tender candidate.

Rzepczynski made $504,000 in 2012 and is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. Langosch believes that right-hander Kyle McClellan is also a non-tender possibility.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that part of the reason the Cardinals were "intrigued" about adding Marc Rzepczynski was because of his past as a starter.

Rzepczynski will pitch in the later innings for the Cards this season, as he made his debut Thursday with two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, striking out four. But, it sounds like his future could be as a member of the rotation. Rzepczynski had some success in spurts as a starter with the Jays and boasted a 3.44 ERA and 9.5 K/9 rate in the minors. He also would seem to fit in well with pitching coach Dave Duncan due to his groundball tendencies, as he holds a 1.9 GB/FB ratio in his career.
