Ryal had been playing with the independent league Sugar Land Skeeters. The 31-year-old hasn't been in the majors since 2010 and is merely a minor league depth addition.

Angels acquired 1B/OF Rusty Ryal from the Dodgers in exchange for cash.

The 30-year-old hasn't played in the Major Leagues since 2010 where he appeared in 104 games with the Diamondbacks. He hit .265/.310/.359 with four homers and 49 RBI in 106 games with Triple-A Albuquerque this season.

An expected move. Ryal, who turns 28 in March, batted .263/.318/.402 with six home runs and 20 RBI in 266 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks over the past two seasons, functioning as a utility player. Ryal's father, Mark, played in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons in 1991 and 1992.

Ryal turned in an ugly .261/.308/.348 batting line over 222 plate appearances fro the Diamondbacks this year. He can probably do better financially in Japan than he would have in the state-side minor leagues.

Making his first start in three weeks, Rusty Ryal hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks' lone run Saturday.

Ryal should be in line for more playing time against righties. He's started just four games all season, but he's hit .317 with a couple of homers in his limited action.

Rusty Ryal was 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored in a win over the Giants on Tuesday night.

Ryal finished a double short of the cycle. He scored in the Diamondbacks' three-run second inning and during the six-run third, adding a solo home run off future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson in the seventh. Not a bad night. Ryal is batting .298/.400/.638 with three homers and four RBI in 47 at-bats since being called up by the Diamondbacks in August. He has a chance to stick around as a utilityman next season.

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of infielder Rusty Ryal from Triple-A Reno.

Ryal was batting .290/.347/.527 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI in 404 at-bats this season with the Reno Aces. His presence will allow Ryan Roberts to shift to the outfield on days when he's needed.
