Reds claimed RHP Ryan Mattheus off waivers from the Angels.
Mattheus worked a scoreless frame in his one relief appearance with the Halos before being designated for assignment. He'll start in middle relief with the Reds but could conceivably work his way into a more integral role given Cincy's bullpen issues. May 13 - 2:06 PM

Angels purchased the contract of RHP Ryan Mattheus from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Angels signed RHP Ryan Mattheus to a minor league contract.

The contract includes an invitation to spring training. Mattheus was an important member of the Nationals' bullpen as recently as 2012, posting a 2.85 ERA over 66 1/3 innings of work, but injuries and inconsistency have knocked him in recent years. The 31-year-old will look to earn a bullpen job with the Halos in spring.

Ryan Mattheus has elected free agency.

Mattheus hasn't pitched very well the last two years, other than a brief stint with the Nationals last season. Still, he's had some success in the past and won't have trouble latching on elsewhere.

The veteran right-hander has had a rough season at Triple-A, compiling a 5.91 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 36/12 K/BB ratio over his 42 2/3 innings. He'll provide another option for the Nationals in the middle innings.

Ryan Mattheus will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.

Nationals optioned RHP Ryan Mattheus to Triple-A Syracuse.

Nationals manager Matt Williams confirmed Thursday that Ryan Mattheus (chest) will not be ready for the start of the season.

Mattheus, sidelined for most of the spring due to inflammation of a tendon in his chest, made his spring debut on Thursday and there simply isn't enough time left on the calendar for him to be ready for Opening Day. However, he should join Washington's bullpen by mid-April if all goes well.

Ryan Mattheus (chest) will make his first appearance of the spring on Thursday.

Mattheus has missed all the action thus far due to, in short, chest inflammation. The right-hander threw to hitters on Monday, and he'll get his first taste of game action Thursday afternoon. Mattheus may still have enough time to earn a bullpen job, but Nationals manager Matt Williams has also been impressed with right-hander Aaron Barrett. Barrett may be a candidate for Mattheus' spot should the 30-year-old not be ready for Opening Day.

Ryan Mattheus (chest) threw to hitters Monday for the first time this spring.

Mattheus fell behind this spring after being diagnosed with costochondritis, which is inflammation of a tendon in his chest, but he said he felt "really good" while using all of his pitches Monday. Relievers typically don't need much work to get ready for the season, but he's going to be cutting it pretty close.
