Torres made one appearance with the Rays back on July 18, but has spent the majority of the season at the Triple-A level, posting a 3.08 ERA and 156/83 K/BB ratio over 146 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old left-hander will likely pitch in long relief down the stretch.

Rays optioned LHP Alex Torres to Triple-A Durham.

That was fast. Torres didn't fare well in his major league debut Monday night against the Yankees, allowing one hit and three walks in the top of the ninth. He took the loss for walking in the go-ahead run. The 23-year-old will be back eventually, but some more work on the minor league level wouldn't hurt.

Rays recalled LHP Alex Torres from Triple-A Durham.

Torres, 23, has a 3.27 ERA over parts of six seasons in the minors. He was 6-6 with a 3.23 ERA and 99/51 K/BB ratio over 18 starts with the Bulls this season. The southpaw could be the first option out of the bullpen if Alex Cobb runs into any trouble in his start against the Yankees on Monday night.

Alex Torres was pulled from Friday's start with Triple-A Durham after just two innings.

He wasn't hurt, so that would seem to indicate that he's at least under consideration to start Monday against the Yankees. It's worth noting that Alex Cobb was pulled from Thursday's start after just two innings, as well, so this could be some gamesmanship on the part of the Rays. Stay tuned.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Alex Torres will begin the season as a starter at Triple-A instead of competing for a bullpen spot.

"The stuff is really good; it's high-end stuff," Maddon said. "You get a young pitcher like that, once he finds fastball command, he will take off." Maddon said Torres, 23, is viewed as valuable starter depth at Triple-A in case injuries should strike. The lefty went 11-6 with a 3.47 ERA over 27 starts with Double-A Montgomery last season.

He's expected to start the season with Triple-A Durham, but could make his way to the majors if injuries strike.

Rays prospect Alex Torres struck out 11 batters over a five-inning start Tuesday in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Torres fanned the last nine batters that he faced. The prized lefty has not allowed an earned run in four VWL starts this year and boasts 25 strikeouts over his first 17 2/3 innings of work. Acquired from the Angels in 2009 in a package for Scott Kazmir, he's on a fast track toward the majors.
